“Awesome place foor the best hamburgers and steak.”
Reviewed November 5, 2012 via mobile

If you feel like either having hamburger or steak, this is the place to be in Reykjavik. Ok it is a little out of the way (still 101 though) and the woman working there isn't exactly always in top form, but the food is great. When going for the steak make sure you have it with brown sauce. I cpuld eat it every day!

“Excellent after a long walk around town”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

After spending a whole day on Laugavegur, we stopped off at Vitabar to get some burgers, fries and large cokes. Food was really good, though I gotta say that the bartender/server looked like she didn't want to be there. Towards the end, you can just tell that this is just her personality, which added a bit of extra charm to the whole dining experience. Not expensive for some good grub.

“Great burgers !”
Reviewed June 8, 2011

Every two or three months we pop round to Vitabarinn for a quick meal. From the outside Vitabarinn looks to be a rather uninviting little bar, and inside it‘s quite dark with seven or so tables and a few bar stools. But, you quickly accept it for what it is – an unpretentious, cosy little neighbourhood bar where most people are regulars, and many of them go there for the burgers.

Vitabarinn doesn‘t have a Web site – you‘ll find it two hundred metres up a gentle hill from Laugavgur, the main shopping street, on the corner of Bergþórugata and Vitastígur, the street on which Hotel Baron is at the bottom corner. It‘s also about the same distance to Hallgrímskirkja, the church which dominates the Reykjavík skyline.

The menu lies atop the bar; there‘s an English version too. In prime place are burgers – regular, cheese, bacon, and combinations, not forgetting the blue cheese burger. Fries are home cooked, skins still on. As a side you‘ll be offered “kokteilsósa “ - cocktail sauce – the ubiquitous Icelandic condiment with burgers or fries, made of a combination of mayonnaise, catsup and mustard.

There are other items on the menu, but I couldn‘t tell you what, other than at least one steak – it‘s the burgers we always go for. Order at the bar, together with your drink, and pay – they do, of course, take plastic. Find a seat; less than 10 minutes later your food will be delivered. The burgers are made the old-fashioned way, perfectly cooked, and juicy!

The last time we ate there the total bill was kr. 3.650 (USD 32) including tax – that was for a bacon cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger, both with regular fries, and one cocktail sauce; and two large draught Víking beers. Tips are not expected.

If you want a great burger and a beer or a glass of wine, served quickly and without fuss, then Vitabarinn is a good choice – we‘ll keep going back!

“If you want two things, burgers and beer, the best place in Reykjavik”
Reviewed March 28, 2010

Vitabar is a very basic bar with seat for about 30 people. Unlike most bars in Reykjavik, they serve very good food. Unlike most bars in Reykjavik, they don't try to be a "restaurant", they're a classic burger joint. Therefore, they serve only three things (in a number of variations): hamburgers, sandwiches and a steak (that comes with chips, two options of sauce and a pint of beer).
The clientele is very mixed, at lunch or dinner time, you'll see everyone there, enjoying the same tasty burgers or steaks. After 9-ish in the evening, it turns into a bar, where I wouldn't bring children to, especially not during the weekend.
The menu hasn't changed for years and the price has barely changed, making this one of the most affordable choices in central Reykjavik. It can be difficult to find for travellers unfamilar with Reykjavik. From Laugavegur (the main shopping street), you'll walk up a cross-street called Vitastigur, until you see the place on your right side. If you're coming from Hallgrimskirkja (the biggest church), you'll go down a street called Frakkastigur and turn right at the first street, named Bergþorugata, where you'll find it on the left side of the street few houses down.
For vegetarians, there really is no decent option on the menu and if you don't eat red meat, you can skip it as well. For the rest of us, who enjoy a good burger and chips for less than 5 Euros, this is a welcome (and possibly the cheapest) rest stop while exploring Reykjavik's city centre.
During the summer, they put out 2-3 tables. This is usually used by smokers, because of the universal smoking ban in bars and restaurants in Iceland.
