This hostel was something of a disappointment for me, especially after reading the reviews. The location is quite good as it is in a neighborhood on the west side of town where it is easy to reach the harbor. Next to that the cleanliness was passible, although it varied throughout the hostel: my 10 bed dorm was emptied of trash every day, but the guest kitchen (a separate building) was usually littered with dirty pans and overflowing trash.
From here on out things were mostly geared towards getting good reviews, to the point of excess. Wait times at the tour desk were excessive and less informed than my outdated lonely planet, membership in hosteling international was mandatory if you wanted to get the preferred rates (a lousy setup in today's world), and the bathrooms were nice but minimal. And when I say minimal I mean there were very few of them. The building must have been apartments in a previous life because there were no bathrooms in any of the hallways. This meant either waiting forever to get into the stinky bathroom in the 10 bed dorm (where I stayed) or going all the way downstairs to the reception (you leave one building and step immediately into the next). Why not put one into the hallway?
I stayed during a busy weekend, and perhaps that was to do with the poor review, but fair is fair. All in all not the beginning to my european travels that I expected, but things got better elsewhere.

I stayed at the Downtown Hostel for three nights and as many reviewers have noted, this hostel is beyond outstanding. Spotlessly clean both in the rooms and public areas, comfortable beds, wonderfully helpful staff, excellent location, reasonable price - this place can't be beat. The 10 person mixed-gender dorm room was well laid-out, with very nice lockers, ensuite toilet and shower with cubbies in the bathroom for each person to put their toiletries, a window that could be opened or shut as was comfortable, and plenty of room for everyone. Every staff person I dealt with was incredibly patient and helpful, answering myriad questions, booking a next-day tour late in the evening for me, giving honest, helpful advice about local attractions, and having a sincerely helpful attitude. In the lobby/reception area, you can buy delicious Skyr (Icelandic yogurt) and what looked to be incredible baked goods at any hour. There is a computer and also free wifi, and plenty of outlets in the common area. (There were only a couple outlets in the room, but everytime I needed to charge my phone one was free). The hostel is within walking distance to just about everything you'd want to see in Reykjavik. In short, this place is perfect!

Great hostel that is centrally located with walking distance to all. Very new/modern and looked after well. We stayed in a private room with beds we could links together which was nice. Bathrooms were clean and they had plenty of street parking right out front-just have to pay for it but not too bad overall. Staff recommended some traditional spot for dinner but just down the way we came across an Icelandic Tapas place which was great and gave us the opportunity to try things like whale and Puffin.

I am well travelled, but this was my first time staying in dorm accommodations. I don't think it could have been any better. The hostel was very clean, and the location was great. There was a bathroom en suite in the 10 person dorm and there was an additional sink with mirror in the room.

This is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in. First off, location was great, seeing as it is right downtown, but about a block away from all the night time noise and traffic. The staff is very helpful with arranging pick-up/drop-off for the airport and for pretty much any tour you want, and there is always someone available. They even helped us coordinate a party in the kitchen with other hostel guests. Rooms are incredibly spacious and organized; each bed has a locker and a corresponding cubby in the bathroom for toiletries. The facility looks brand new and is pretty much spotless. Wifi is available everywhere and easy to hop onto. If I ever return to Reykjavik, I will absolutely be staying here!

I actually wrote a blog post about this amazing hostel, which you can read in full here: http://seattlestravels.com/hi-hostel-reykjavik-downtown/

The Hostel not only provides some serious comfort and accommodations, but they can even set you up on an awesome tour of the extreme Icelandic countryside. With numerous dorms to choose from, private bathrooms, a guest kitchen, common room and tasty breaskfast bar… what’s not to love about HI Hostel Reykjavík Downtown?

Our beloved 10 Bed Road Princess Dorm at the HI Hostel Reykjavík Downtown was perfect, and looked like it came straight out of an IKEA catalogue (a good thing, in my opinion). We arrived late at night, and took the two empty beds closest to the windows. Exhausted from traveling, we immediately crashed into our comfortable beds for a great night’s sleep.

The dorm had it’s own private bathroom which was located at the back end of the room, away from the windows. Just like the rest of the hostel, the lights were automated and environmentally friendly. I love a hostel that conserves electricity!

I’ve made use of a large number of hostel kitchens in my days of traveling, and I’ve never been so impressed as I was at the kitchen of HI Hostel Reykjavík Downtown. Cleanliness is usually one of my biggest concerns, but this kitchen was always spotless.

The Common Area was probably my favourite thing about the entire hostel. I always love a good common area, and this one looked almost like a fancy restaurant and a cozy café mixed into one. The huge front window was lined with four-seater tables, with a great view of the street.

We spent seven nights at the HI Hostel Reykjavík Downtown, and I really enjoyed it. I hope to head back to Reykjavík in the next couple of years (if not sooner!), and I will definitely be going back to the HI Hostel.

It has the perfect location, a friendly atmosphere, and comfortable accommodations. It can easily be compared to a top hotel, I can honestly say that it is one of the best hostels that I have ever visited!

Room Tip: I got a good look at the private room, they were hotel-worthy. However, the dorm rooms are just as g...
