Owner description: The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colours across the Icelandic Arctic sky. The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is dependant on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. Refreshments not included.

Going to Iceland in the middle of winter makes for dangerous driving, especially at night. We decided to take the northern lights tour with Reykjavik Excursions because they were the cheapest we found and their office was easy to walk to. The first night we had an awesome guide who was hilarious. We went out to this replica 'Viking House' (convieniently early so people would buy overpriced drinks) but you could stay in the bus if you wanted so luckily I had bought my book. Unfortunately we didn't see any lights so we got to come back. The second night we had a really boring guide - it was like listening to your high school science teacher! This time we went up to the national park and she was actually very help full when taking photos. Even though we didn't get to see the lights with our eyes we got some pretty awesome shots on the camera and our ticket is still valid for 2 years if we do happen to go back! It was great having professionals otherwise we wouldn't of known they were even there!

“Boat trip”
Reviewed March 25, 2014 via mobile

We were probably just two of the fortunate few to see the Northern Lights due to the bizarre weather, snow plus a full moon, we went on my partners birthday and saw the lights - which were spectacular. I am so glad we went on the trip, although exhausted it was worth it.

“Not a lot of luck but a well conducted outing”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

We tried this excursion twice - we saw not a sausage on night one so rebooked for a second try (free of charge) via our hotel reception. On the second trip we could still only see through an SLR camera so as part of the guarantee R.E. are running if we go back within 12 months we can try again, also for free. Seeing as it's a natural phenomenon totally outside of their control, I think this is great.

Our hosts on the coaches were very good, one in particular who was also a physics teacher gave us lots of information and was very helpful with other aspects such as photography tips and pointing out the starts and planets.

Notes: There's no toilet facilities on the coach or at wherever you go while hunting the lights, so bear that in mind at dinner time.
Also, if you're taking photos do try and cover up any lights your camera might create - that little red light during the exposure will show very large in other people's photos if they are snapping away far behind you.

“Not quite what we expected...”
Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

Firstly I would like to point out that this review is in no way related to the staff operating the tour, they were lovely (as were all the locals we came across).

The first two nights we were meant to go on this tour were cancelled due to bad weather so we went on the third night and were sorely disappointed! We were taken to a 'darkened area' to watch for the northern lights, but from where I live this is by no means dark! We could see all the lights from the nearest villiage and couldn't help but see the glow from the nearby greenhouses.

On arriving we were told that we would wait at this place for a while and if we didn't see the lights we would move on....3 hours later everyone was back on the bus freezing and no sign of any staff? The bus was freezing on the drive back to Reykjavik, don't think I've ever been so cold in my life.

Even if we'd seen the lights I still wouldn't have been impressed by this service - it's more like a taxi service than a tour.
