Owner description: The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colours across the Icelandic Arctic sky. The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is dependant on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. Refreshments not included.

A great tour that we had booked online about a month in advance. The minibus picked us up from our hotel and then took us to the Reykjavik Excursions bus terminal where we then transferred to the coach that was to take us out on the hunt for the northern lights! The company are very well organised and always on time, no complaints there. Our guide on the coach was very knowledgeable and as we were driving out she would point out the lights in the sky! So we quickly pulled over to see if we could see them, but they had disappeared. We stayed there for about half an hour waiting but no lights. They could be spotted again in the distance so we carried on driving pulled up to a dark, open space, where we then saw the Northern Lights!! Wow, so spectactular! They kept coming and going so we stayed at this same place for well over an hour giving us plenty of time to get some pictures. You can, of course, go back on to the bus to wait in the warm, as it is very cold when just standing around waiting - I advise lots of thermal clothing! What a fantastic tour, we loved it! Not at any time did the guide insist we leave, she gave us penty of time to take in the stunning view. We used Reykjavik Excursions for our bus to the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle Afternoon tour. The guides were always very friendly and knowledgeable and all buses on time! Fantastic experience.

The company sends out minivans to pick up clients from hotels and then brings them to the main terminal to start the tour. The main problem we had was that we were late getting picked up, which meant that all busses were full when we got to the terminal (can't they count?). So we had to wait for another bus, and left the lot well after the other busses. Then, we made a further stop to pick up two more clients who they apparently forgot to pick up. Instead of leaving the terminal at 8:30, we did not get on the road after picking up the last two until 9:30. Our guide said he expected the best lights to occur at about 10PM, and he was correct. As (bad) luck would have it, we were still on the bus going through town when we first saw some nice lights. But we could not stop so we could not really see them well and of course no pictures possible. By the time we got to a designated stopping spot, those lights were long gone and we never did see anything like them again. The guide kept saying he was seeing some, but to us it looked more like low-level ground-lit clouds. The point is that the clients on the other busses were already stopped and got the nice show, while we were still on the bus. I know they cannot predict even if the lights will show, but they can get you out to maximize your chances. Although we were here several nights, this was the only night with clear skies so we were unable to try again. Very disappointed.

Despite not seeing what we went for we loved our short break in Reykjavik. We flew out on WOW airlines which proved to be a most enjoyable experience the sense of humour and efficiency of the crew puts the bigger airlines to shame. We stayed at the Reykjavik Lights Hotel which at first we thought was a bit too far out of town but it wasn't. This appeared to be a new hotel very modern and comfortable we were lucky to have a room looking out over the bay which was stunning. Breakfast was good the staff friendly and helpful.
The pre-arranged trips to see the Northern Lights and Whale watching were all very efficient, I felt sorry for the staff having to try to make it more exciting than it was especially for the Lights as they knew before we set out that it was highly unlikely that we would see any but they did their best to keep us interested and tried different sites.

We loved Iceland and would like to return perhaps in the summer. Eating out was not cheap but no more expensive than most European Capital Cities if you are a drinker you won't be able to afford to get drunk! You don't need to change money to local currency as they take credit card everywhere even for small purchases.

Our trip was arranged by Fleetway Travel who provided a good service at a reasonable price.

Highly recommend it.

Wonderful experience of the Northern Lights on this Jeep Safari. We were taken out by the most helpful and informative guide "ZARA". Zara was funny, enthusiastic, and so friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Due to her persistence we had a fantastic show of the Northern Lights, along with just one other couple this was an intimate and inspiring trip. Thank you Reykjavik Excursions and especially Zara.

NEVER SAW THE LIGHTS AFTER STANDING IN THE COLD FOR 3 hours, all we saw was a cloud, they said this was good, we did see a short glimpe of them on our retun to Reykjavik, one tip is do not bother trying to take a picture if you are lucky enough to see them with a phone or digital camera as they will not be able to get any, you need a S L R camera this is according to the guide
