Owner description: The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colours across the Icelandic Arctic sky. The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is dependant on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. Refreshments not included.

We were in Iceland for 3 nights and went out on the tour the second night. My only complaint is they are not great at explaining what is going to happen. We were picked up from the hotel and taken to the Bus station then put on another bus ( I had read this would happen from other reviews so was not too surprised) but they could be a little clearer about what to do. We were not out long before we could see the Aurora starting and pulled into a car parking area somewhere outside of Reykjevik. We were treated to an extraordinary display. It is not the same as the pictures in terms of colour it is more milky white but the shapes and changes are the same the night was so clear and filled with stars, that alone was worth seeing. We were very lucky as with any natural event there are no guarentees but we were treated to a stunning display.

We were in Iceland for four nights and decided to go on this tour the first night, wow, am I glad we did. After getting out of the coach, it was the starriest sky I'd ever seen, the Lights appeared after a short time, not what I expected but at least they were there. After freezing for a couple of hours we were about to get on the coach when we got the most amazing display of the Lights dancing round the sky, you had to be there to appreciate them because it's hard to describe in words. People who waited for the next few nights saw nothing, it's pot luck! If you are lucky then it's an experience you'll never forget.

Don't bother paying for this ,we booked this from day one and planned our day around going getting up early and eating dinner early as you need to be picked up at 830pm at your hotel .. The first day was cancelled due to the cloud cover so again we came back the second day and planned our day around it and the third day , All too cloudy . On the last day of our holiday when we needed to be up at 530 for the trip home ironically the trip did actually take place it was a five hour crowded coach journey in the dark and cold with 3 random stops in the national park .. We didn't see anything ... I know this cant be helped but its a lot of time and you end up planing a lot of your holiday around it

In my opinion You'd be better off keeping an eye on the weather throughout your holiday
( icelandic met office have a northern lights section letting you know when and where it could be including cloud density ect )and hiring a car to go to the park and seeing it yourself .. At least that way you could do it at your own leisure and if it isn't working out you can head off back to your hotel without having to wait or transport a load of other tourists . All you really need do is find a secluded spot away from the city lights .

The conditions to see the Northern Lights were not favorable but our students (and the staff) were desperate to try and see them - so our guide arranged the coach and off we went in search - we first went to a high spot where we thought we would be lucky as the skies were clear and there were plenty of stars - but after about an hour - we drove off towards the National Park - but it became cloudy. So we were on our way back to Reykjavik - very disappointed but then suddenly the guide spotted something and there they were - we parked up and watched in awe for about 40 mins. Freezing cold but well worth it - if you go to Iceland at the right time of year - you must do this if nothing else. But beware - some private companies go out to early and return to early - we saw the lights at about 1.00a.m. a couple staying at our hotel had gone out on a visit the same night and didn't see them as the tour had returned them to the hotel at 11.00pm - we were just getting started then.

Travelled just outside Rekjavic last Friday - we werent holding out much hope but, after stopping in a random field....the skies cleared, and we could suddenly see a strange green light. We then travelled further north where it was reported there was some more activity, got out the coach and watched them some more. On the way back we stopped again for a last look. The tour guide was very knowledgable and gave us lots of background and also some tips on taking photos. I would thoroughly recommend this trip - Reykjavic Excursions.
