The tunnel itself is worth a visit but combined with the friendly knowledgeable guides makes this a fantastic experience. The path can be slippy but easy enough.

We took the one hour tour and enjoyed the experience very much. This was in the winter. Our guide provided fascinating details on how the tunnel was formed and about Icelandic geology in general. The tunnel is well lighted so that you can easily view the colorful wall formations. You start in the ticket office, which has free clean toilets. You are provided a helmet with a light on top, and slip-on crampons for your shoes to make it easier to walk on icy spots. There are some handrails and grated steel walkways in parts of the tunnel, but not in all parts. The path requires you to walk up and down some snow-covered paths and over rocky surfaces. Snow gets into the tunnel because it is open to the outside in four places. The snow adds to the beauty of the tunnel. It is not a difficult walk, but if you have any trouble walking, or you worry about slipping and falling, taking this tour IN THE WINTER is probably not for you. We were told that in the summer, the conditions in the tunnel are quite different.
