Owner description: Elding is a tour supplier in Reykjavik offering whale watching and other adventures at sea all year round. We are conveniently located just off Reykjavik's old harbor. The various types of whales commonly sighted include minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises and the popular humpback whales. We will be accompanied by sea birds such as gannets, puffins, guillemots, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns, and many more. Check our online Whale Diary for daily updates on whale sightings. To make our tours even more comfortable, we provide our passengers with warm (and floatable) overalls and raincoats. For safety reasons, all children under 12 years of age are required to wear life jackets during the tour.

We had a great time on this Northern Lights night cruise. We were lucky enough to see some good displays in the sky almost as soon as we set sail. Megan, our guide, was very well informed and great at spotting the signs of emerging displays.

The boat did pitch a little even though the sea was calm so we were glad we had accepted the free sea-sickness tablet offered at the start of the trip so that we could enjoy the journey without feeling off-colour.

A good trip as it incorporates a boat trip, possible sightings, information and a nice hot chocolate and rum drink!

We took the whale watching tour 02.01.15 with Elding and were extremely excited.
It was a windy day and so Elding decided to take 2 coaches to Keflavik and sail from there as to have a more comfortable ride. Around 5 minutes into sailing the tour guide said she spotted a Porpoise but unfortunately it didn't show itself again. We saw a few different types of seabirds that day but no Cetaceans.
Although it would have been amazing to see one I understand you can't control nature and I still thoroughly enjoyed the ride. We were given a complimentary ticket which is valid for 2 years. We did plan to go again on the Monday but due to rough conditions at sea the tour was cancelled.

We were provided with thick windproof overalls which kept us warm and comfortable. Without these I don't think I could have stayed in my spot upon the top deck for the duration of the tour as it was extremely cold and windy.
I would highly recommend Elding whale watching if it's something you are interested in.

Thank Leanne P

We went out late November and the see was slightly rough and the competitor company cancelled their whale watching trip. However, Elding bussed us to another port and we sailed from there back into Reykjavik along the coastline. The views were nice but unfortunately no whales or dolphins came out to play. This is mother nature so we are not complaining and we had an enjoyable time on board. We did take the anti-sickness tablets and they helped as we did not feel sick at all even thought it was quite rough and choppy and sometimes dangerous to walk around. We found that being out in the fresh air was also better and you can hide behind the various partitions and walls away from the prevailing wind so you do not get as cold. The flotation suits were remarkably warm and I brought extra clothing but I did not need to put them on. Bring your own hat and gloves etc. We did receive the free two year return ticket as compensation and hopefully we may revisit Iceland in this timeframe. Better luck next time!

Dear WiltshireTraveller66,

Thank you very much for your review.

Your pointers regarding the thermal suits, staying out in the fresh air and bringing your own warm clothing are great! We are sorry to hear there were no whales around this time - hopefully you get a chance to join us again within the next 2 years!

The company was very organised as rather than cancel the trip they bussed us to another harbour to meet the boats, and then landed back in Reykjavik – not sure what the reason was.

The guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable but unfortunately – no whales today though we did see some porpoises. So, we got vouchers for a free trip in the next two years. The trip lasted about 3 hours with everyone out on deck scanning the seas on the way out, but then everyone downstairs in the café/lounge are on the way back as it turned quite cold and blustery as the sun set – but this is Iceland in December so to be expected and they do provide thermal suits if you want one - a lot of people did take up the offer.

Overall, a good way to spend an afternoon – would have been even better if the whales had made an appearance.

The tour was booked through Icelandic excursions (grey line) and while it was organised it was a let down when it came to the boat. There are 3 floors, two upper outdoor floors and one lower deck "saloon" area. The day was overcast but the crew were upbeat, I don't mind that we didn't see any whales but this company seriously needs to look at heating the lower deck in wet conditions, doing a major clean and overhaul on their toilets as the toilet spit water upwards randomly (thankfully nothing else), needs to be painted and an air freshener wouldn't go a miss. Bar food was ok and reasonably priced.

Dear Shamrock330,

Thank you for taking the time to review our tour and for sharing your thoughts. The boat is scheduled for an overhaul in a few day's time where we will change all lavatories, the saloon will get a makeover and the heating system will be repaired. We hope you could make use of the overalls we have onboard!
