Owner description: Elding is a tour supplier in Reykjavik offering whale watching and other adventures at sea all year round. We are conveniently located just off Reykjavik's old harbor. The various types of whales commonly sighted include minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises and the popular humpback whales. We will be accompanied by sea birds such as gannets, puffins, guillemots, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns, and many more. Check our online Whale Diary for daily updates on whale sightings. To make our tours even more comfortable, we provide our passengers with warm (and floatable) overalls and raincoats. For safety reasons, all children under 12 years of age are required to wear life jackets during the tour.

The crew and staff on the Elding Whale Watching tour are phenomenal. My boyfriend and I took this trip on July 7 and will never forget it. Unfortunately, it seemed that about half the passengers were seasick due to a rough day at sea. We were not as fortunate as others to see as many animals (a couple minke whales and dolphins, but no hump backs). During the 2.5-3 hour trip, a special crew member deserves a huge thank you for her exceptional work in making sure everyone on board was feeling their best. Elin jumped around consoling the ill, handing out and picking up vomit bags, and ensuring that they felt as well as they could. She was a saint. If it weren't for her, I'm not so sure my boyfriend wouldn't have tried to jump in the water. Hopefully these rocky days at sea are few and far between, but the staff certainly does their best to make you feel better. The red suits they give everyone help infinitely with the cold weather and ensure you're dressed for the trip even if you didn't come prepared! Thank you again, Elin. We will never forget you!

Dear Nico B,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience of our whale watching tour. As much as we're sorry to hear about your rough weather experience we're really glad to hear how much help our crew members were to you. We've always set out to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for our guests and unfortunately somedays that simply means sea sickness remedies. We've naturally shared your comments with Elín and the rest of our team :)

All the best from Iceland,
The Elding team

Of course I knew that chances are slim you actually get a proper look at the tail or so, but a 2.5h boat ride to see a single minke whale fin for three seconds was simply disappointing. At a price over 50 euro pp these were the most expensive seconds of spotting of my life. And.. do realize this trip was no exception in this regard -- see the journal at their website.

The puffin island visited on the way back felt as a consolation price. However, the pictures and clips I've shot are rather crappy because the boat is rocking at quite a distance.

Dear Proefkinijn,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our whale watching tour. We are sad to hear that the encounter was this short, normally that would result in a complimentary tour (e.g. no sightings or poor sightings). As our tours are run in wild nature we can never guarantee sightings or the quality of them, but giving out the complementary tickets is our way to help passengers increase their chances of good sightings. Our system works that way that at the end of each tour our guide and captain discuss the tour and decide from thereon what to do.

Today we "did" a whale watching trip with Elding and it was Super! It was for Iceland a "good weather "day (for us it was still freezing as we are living on Aruba)..The warm overalls were really necessary for us and we were very happy that we got them. Just out of the harbor there were lots of Dolphins one with baby! After that beautiful view we went further on the sea and were lucky to see 15 Mink whales that day! Of course that is not possible every time but for us it was a great day at sea. It was totally not crowded on board and the information giving was very clear also for the little ones. We (as volunteers of the sea shepherd org.) were also very happy with the information giving by the crew that eating whales is not something you should do in Iceland. It is something the restaurants serve for the tourist so when people stop asking for it and eating it maybe it can stop. We really got a great day and something to remember for a long time!

On my trip I saw 6+ Minke whales and 4+ dolphins along with the puffin island. Since I went in Summer my trip included the puffins. The closest whale was 50m away. The guide informed us that the boat does not use sonar to attract the whales. The company does seem to pride itself on being environmentally friendly. I went in July and I was freezing. Thankfully they give you insulated fisherman's overalls. I was still cold, but it was live-able. Take gloves! The trip lasted 3 hours. For the first and last 35-40 minutes you are going to the area where the whales are, further from the city. While the boat was not overly crowded there did not seem to be enough seats for everyone to sit outside, so if you go with people hold on to your seats. Plenty of seats inside. Well worth it. I almost went back out the next day. I would recommend allocating 3.5-4 hours for this excursion because you have to get to the boat and secure a seat and get to and from the pier.

Went on the afternoon tour on 25/3. Saw hump backed and minke whales plus dolphins, from as close as 20-30 metres. Truly awesome to see such majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Unforgettable.
