Reykjavik is a wonderful city to walk around in, and Gunnar's apartment is the perfect location from which to start your journey. We stayed in the "extra-luxurious studio apartment" on the top floor, with super views. Gunnar was very helpful and the apartment was perfect for 2 people. In the summertime, definitely bring your eye-covers to help you sleep, as the studio is very bright and the shades don't cover all the windows. I would certainly recommend renting this studio from Gunnar to any active couple!

My husband and I stayed in one of Gunnar's apartments for three nights in June 2012. Our stay was fantastic - we can't wait to stay there again. The location was great - off the main area so it was quiet at night but just a few steps from downtown.

Gunnar was a great host - he stocked the fridge with quite a bit of food before we arrived. He was very friendly and was available to answer questions. He was great about communicating with us before we arrived and allowed us to check out late.

We stayed in the "extra luxurious apartment" - a studio apartment on the 3rd floor of a building a few buildings down from the main yellow building. The view was very pretty and the apartment was great - had everything we needed and more.

I highly recommend House of the Spirits. We ended up eating out most nights, so whether or not you you are interested in cooking for yourself, it is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the "extra luxurious apartment" - a studio apartment on the 3rd floor of a building a few buildings down from the main yellow building. The view was very pretty and the apartment was great - had everything we needed and more.

Gunnar was really helpful and very welcoming when we arrived. He also gave us a great map (hard to explain but one side was normal and the other side had the houses and buildings of all the roads illustrated on it ie. gunnars house was painted yellow and all the landmarks like the churches were drawn in). He also gave us some pointers about the local swimming baths and where to buy food etc. which was great.

There were basic provisions in the kitchen which was a nice touch and it was also really nice to be able to cook/eat in. Our fridge had Skyr, milk some fruit and veg and lots of cooking condiments, muesli and snack bars as well as tea, coffee and swiss miss! the rooms are nicely decorated but aren't 100% perfect, but that was what we really liked as it has a lovely homey feel. The place was very clean and nice & warm.

The location is absolutely amazing. We loved being some near to the harbour and the main streets which was really convenient as lots of the tours start at the harbour which is a 5 min walk max, so if you care about location, this is a great choice.

Gunnar is an absolute sweetie, really helpful and a lovely man. We pretty much did our own thing as we'd booked a lot in advance but because there are lots of buildings attached to house of spirits I would recommend you bring a phone to text/call him if you want to be sure you can get in touch as while has is normally about there isn't a front desk or anything, but this wasn't a problem for us.

We paid in ISK and thought the room was great value for money.

I don't think this is for everyone and if you want a 5* hotel look elsewhere but for us it was absolutely perfect!

We stayed at the House of Spirits for one night and it was a great way to end our tour around Iceland! Gunnar was the most thorough, friendly and informative host we encountered in any of the Guesthouses we stayed in! He was very good about email communication before the trip and answered our questions when we arrived. The Guesthouse is so continently located to the city center that we were able to walk to the tourist info center in under 3 minutes! Our room was very clean and spacious. Highly recommended!

The studio we rented (as a couple) was ideal for a few days in Reykjavik. Gunner was extremely helpful before our arrival. He answered all my questions and gave me very detailed instruction on how to find his place. He also offers guided tours if needed. We had issues with our flight and came in a day late which he was very understanding about (and didn't charge extra) and also let us check in early (flights from the US arrive around 6.30am) and leave late. Very accommodating! Thank you. His assistants around the corner were very sweet and helpful (as most Icelanders are).

If you are driving, if you park just a block or two away parking is free, otherwise you need to pay 80 Kroner an hour between 10am and 6pm if you park on the same street. (Gas is around US$9 a gallon!) but the small rental cars are very fuel efficient.)

We paid 14,800 Kroner (US$114) for one night and I understand it is more cost effective to stay longer. Payment is accepted in local currency, US $or credit.

There was a little kitchenette so we could prepare food and was very conveniently stocked with milk, cereal, tea and coffee. There was a table and chairs, little sitting area and traditional European style bed (two beds pushed together with separate comforters). The bathroom was small but plenty of hot water - just what is needed after a day out in the cold wind and rain. The room is cozy and warm.

The downtown area is a short walk and there is a great little grocery store around the corner with a lovely woman that kindly offered to show us some 'traditional disgusting Icelandic food!' Most places are more expensive than the US, but at least there is no tipping.

The only little negative - which would only bother you if you are a perfectionist - is there is some finishing needed on the apartment. It is also up two flights of stairs, so if you are young and fit this should not be of any concern.
