Aurora Guesthouse
Ranked #29 of 108 Reykjavik B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 25, 2010

Stayed at the Aurora for three nights as part of a tour and stayed in room 23.

Positives - Guesthouse is located close to the centre of Reykjavik (walking distance to central shops/bars and cathedral etc). Room was basic but we had been led to expect this in Iceland (if a bit cramped) and was clean - two single beds, a table & chair, wardrobe, bedside unit, lamp and washbasin and the blackout curtains did a great job of cutting out the 24hr daylight. Breakfast was typical scandinavian fare - choice of cereal, tea/coffee/juice, bread, cheese, meat, tomato/cumber, egg, jam etc.

Negatives - Noise: the layout of the Guesthouse is such that all the rooms lead off one wooden staircase. The noise from people going up and down the stairs and the noisy door locks tended to echo up and down the stairs and could be clearly heard in the rooms. Our room was also next to the toilet/shower and we could hear when people were using the room. We got through this by wearing ear plugs but others in our group weren't so prepared. However, the real issue for us was the shared toilet/shower. Room 23 was on the first floor together with 4 other rooms and there was just one toilet/shower. We checked the guesthouse room plan and even though a couple of rooms were singles others were family rooms, which meant with all rooms full potentially 14 people needing to use one toilet/shower (the toilet and shower are in the same room). It wasn't quite that bad for us - just 8 people booked into our floor, but that was bad enough. The ratio on the other floors wasn't much better. Overall this place may be considered good value based on location (although difficult for us to say how the cost compares because it was booked as part of a package) but if I came back to Reykjavik independently I would choose to pay more and stay somewhere with en-suite facilities or at least where there was a better ratio of bathrooms.

We spent five nights here, before going on a tour of the High country. Our flight arrangements were totally thrown by our first flight suffering a technical problem and we had to buy new tickets and arrived at 01H30 instead of 16H00. We sent an email to Siggi who owns the guesthouse, and the front door was left open for us with our keys clearly marked when we arrived so we could go straight to bed for a short night ... in daylight!

Our room contained three very comfortable and clean single beds, a washbasin, a wardrobe and table and chair. Being on the street adjacent to the pavement we did hear noise from those getting pizzas from the take away down the street, but the blackout curtains meant that we were able to sleep. There was always hot water, but the wc/shower was often occupied so we had to wait to use it.

Breakfast was generous and tasty - the hot bread is a treat - and Siggi made us inexpensive but substantial packed lunches for the day trips we had booked. He's quite a shy, modest man, but is keen to help if you need tours booking or just general information. You can use the breakfast room in the evenings to sit in and read! Breakfast can be very early if you ask in advance, and nothing seems to be too much trouble.

I would be very happy to stay here again - fair prices for Iceland - and very near to the Hallgrimur's Church and downhill to the BSI bus station. Excursion feeder coaches picked us up on time for each booked excursion and dropped us back so we had no need to traipse into town to start our day.

A friendly and comfy welcome to Iceland. Thanks Siggi.

This place is okay. Andrea guesthouse gets noisy depending on who stays in the dorm and there were too many rooms for one common WC so you often have to wait to go to the bathroom or shower.

However, the place is very clean and there is a nice space to eat breakfast (not included) and rest.
