“West is the best!”

I was volunteering with a project in Heydalur for two weeks and I was amazed every day. Location is amazing, remote, but totally worth it. The staff is very friendly and helpful and facilities are nice. Absolutely the best food - everything is cooked with knowledge and heart. The bread!!!Natural hot tubs and pools are a perfect way to relax or to do some sports on your holiday...:) Riding with the Icelandic horses in the fjords is an experience of itself. There were seals and whale in the same fjord! Also possible to to shorter on longer hikes in the area. Nature and surroundings is beautiful!

We stayed at Heydalur in May 2013. The property is off the beaten path. The staff were very accommodating and we ate dinner in the restaurant. Excellent food. The rooms were comfortable and nice. Our guide around the property was Loki, a collie dog. He loves to fetch stones and has a arctic fox as his friend. The natural hot pot was quite nice. We spent about an hour in it enjoying the view and the extended daylight. I wish we would have booked one more night here. Our kayaking trip was booked in Ísafjörður which is about 1 hour 30 minutes away. If you contact the staff and wish to do kayaking they can schedule something closer. We found this out when we arrived. Excellent hotel and staff. Great stay.

My husband and I went for out honeymoon, and this was an amazing trip. Gisli, Elisse and Stella were welcoming, warm, friendly, helpful and just everything you would ask for in tour guides. The food was authentic and amazing; really well prepared, a wide variety of dishes and more than enough, the service was friendly and honest; they made sure we got to do everything we wanted, and the excursions were fun and personal! The rooms were very clean, well stocked and convenient and we had a great time. From the time we met them to the time they dropped us off, we felt like we had met our Icelandic family. I recommend this stay to anyone going to Iceland , as it really gets you out of Reykjavik and into "real" Iceland.

We stayed at Heydalur in February 2013. A stunning location with mountains and valley all around. Accommodation at Heydalur is very comfortable and clean. The food is exceptional with fresh warm breads as part of the breakfast offerings. Pack lunches and a 3 course evening meals are all part of the package and you will not go hungry.
The excursions are well organised with additional clothing for ice fishing supplied. Stella is a wealth of information on the history of the area and seems to know everyone. Because of its remoteness it is perfect for viewing the northern lights.
They cannot do enough for you to make sure you have a superb experience and made us very welcome throughout our stay. A wonderful and very different holiday, thank you.

We went to Heydalur for ptarmigan hunting, the weather was very bad on the way from Reykjavik but we arrived after 5 hours. The rooms are very nice, the service good, breakfast and dinner well above what you could expect. All in all, great place and I will go there again and in summer time.

I stayed here a few nights with my husband and my parents, and we all loved it. We rented one of the cabins on the property, so we had the ability to cook some of our own dinners, but we had breakfast in the restaurant each morning and ate dinner in the restaurant a couple of nights and were never disappointed. My husband and I are vegetarian, and even though the Icelandic diet tends to be very meat-heavy, we still ate very, very well. The family who own the property were absolutely wonderful people.

I will say that this is probably not a place that would work for someone wanting high end amenities. It is, after all, a working farm, and you have to drive 12km down a very bumpy gravel road to get to it. It is, however, perfect for someone who likes their comforts a little on the adventurous side. At one point high winds knocked out power for a few hours, which caused problems with our hot water supply. The owner's son was very helpful, though, and dealt with the issue promptly.

We never did manage to ride the horses while we were there, but I did do a solo hike back into the valley, and I'd highly recommend it for anyone who likes the outdoors, and especially for anyone with a background in natural sciences, as the diversity of species is amazing. As you go deeper into the valley, the dirt tracks turn into horse paths and eventually you're on your own with some potentially treacherous terrain. Hiking with a buddy is probably safer, but I ventured as far in as I felt was safe to do by myself and thoroughly loved it. There's also a resident arctic fox who was orphaned and raised on the farm. She's best friends with the family's border collie, and the two play together most mornings.

We stayed there in late August for two nights in a guesthouse. The guesthouse is very comfortable and clean. The area is very quiet and the landscape is great. We did a two hour horse riding trip, which was nice as well. The horses are calm and quite easy to handle. We had lunch and dinner which was well prepared and tasty. The personnel is very friendly. Life is easy in Heydalur!
