“Middle of nowhere rustic charm - arctic fox outside our door!”
Reviewed May 17, 2012

First of all, this accommodation is absolutely not in Isafjordur. It is in the countryside about an hour and a half from the city. Nonetheless, it is an absolutely fantastic guesthouse. The surroundings are magical and I really wish we had been able to stay here longer and enjoy some horseback riding or kayaking.

The staff are very friendly, warm, and accommodating. They provided us with plates and cutlery for our self-catered meal, when they could have easily refused to do so as they have their own restaurant (restaurant looked really nice and cozy). The staff will also let you borrow from their board game collection and bring these to your room.

Our room was very quaint, quiet, and with a beautiful view over the mountains and pastures. They seemed to be expanding the guesthouse while we were there. We really enjoyed the outdoor hot pot, which was very warm.

At one point we stepped outside and THERE WAS AN ARCTIC FOX OUTSIDE OUR DOOR! As animal lovers, we were absolutely enthralled to get a chance to be so close to one of Iceland's most elusive creatures. It made our stay at Heydalur that much more special.

We spent 4 nights here as part of a week's holiday arranged by Discover the World. It was an all-inclusive tour/stay with transport to and from Reykjavik included. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable and tailor your activities to your abilities and the weather. You are 5 times more likely to see the Northern lights here than from Reykjavik and we saw a fantastic display on our first night. We also walked to a glacier and went icefishing. The food was superb - a real plus. The rooms are a bit basic but very warm just like your welcome. I'm not sure if the service would be quite so personal/good in summer when the campsite will be operating but in winter it was exemplary.

Room Tip: Only 3 rooms and 2 summer houses so not much choice, but it's the food/facilities/welcome etc th...

Imagine 2 guests, Stella and the waitress/maid (rest of family away themselves) 4 people, and the nearest occupied place 20 minutes by road Fabulous,
Stella our guide / host / cook, taking us to the glacier, and Ísafjordur and Bolungarvík as day trips, places of interest opened enroute just for us, oh so relaxed.
Fantastic food from Fish to Lamb and of course Puffin 3 course meals (I'll return just for the food).
Late October so days were short but we were extra lucky 3 of 4 nights lit by northern lights (one red event). Champagne in hot tub/spring with a little snow around and lights dancing in the sky above heaven on earth.
As we walked to and fro the resturant and chaley were followed by an Artic Fox, even saw a whale as we driven around.

Room Tip: Stay and dont expect too much think where you are 100 miles from !! Enjoy --- buy champagne in duty...

We stayed at Heydalur for four nights at the beginning of November.Stella, Gisle and Elise made us feel very welcome and and were very attentive. The food was, fabulous, all the things we intended to try whilst in Iceland, ie smoked puffin, salted cod etc. The weather outside was chilly but the rooms and the restaurant area were always lovely and warm. The beds were very comfy. We made use of the outside hotpots, although warm headwear was required but also used the hottub in the pool house. At the time we were there the pool house could have done with being tidied a bit, the plants were shedding leaves everywhere, but the pool itself was clean.
We had hoped to see the northern lights, but despite Gisle spending time out with us till midnight up a mountain ,to search for them we were disappointed, better luck next time.
Not in the least disappointed with our stay overall though. Thanks guys it was great.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of October. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the food at the restaurant was large portions of delicious homestyle meals. We were definitely there in the off season, so the chilly weather and wind limited our use of the outside hot pots, but the indoor hot tub was a nice alternative. It appears that they may take somewhat less attention to the grounds in the off season and the barn with the indoor hot tub was a little overgrown with trees and cobwebs. All and all, not enough to detract from the peaceful stay, however. It is good to know that this resort is about 100km from much of anything else which was perfect for what we wanted, but might feel a little isolated to others.

We traveled in Iceland in July for 10 days. Knowing that we could not see the entire country we opted to do the Golden Loop of tourist activities and then head for the remote North West Fiordland.

The Inn at Heydalur was at the back end of a classic Icelandic fiord. The buildings were not fancy but quite adequate and warm. The beds clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly but unobtrusive. A young french woman took us horseback riding one day. She actually let us run the horses which I've never experienced when renting horses for a day trip. In retrospect a full day rental would have been much more fun.

They have two hot tubs. One is contemporary and just next to the rooms and the horse stalls. The other we preferred is grass and flower lined without any amenities. For the adventurous hiker there are hills and valleys to roam in all directions. Once off the main road the trails become a bit hard to follow.

Room Tip: Be sure that a family of small children is not in the room above you (unless you like that sort of t...

We stayed in Heydalur this September for one night. On arrival we were greeted by Tinna the dog and Kopi the parrot, who entertained us for the evening - not to mention the pet arctic fox who runs around the grounds... Unfortunately, we didn't have time to try out any of the numerous activities on offer (horse riding, kayaking, northern lights watching, hiking, just to name a few) - except for the fabulous outdoor natural hot tub and indoor swimming pool/greenhouse/barn (not the blue lagoon but certainly the quirkiest pool I have ever seen!). The rooms were a very decent hotel standard, clean and cosy. The dinner served by our hostess was one of the nicest on our trip to Iceland - try the fabulous smoked puffin. For breakfast we had freshly picked blueberries (among a vast choice of other nice Icelandic treats). All in all, great value for money in lovely and memorable surroundings.
