This motel and adjacent campsite are nothing more of an afterthought to Alex's car garage next door. Its a small place with a handful of tiny rooms, it reminded me more of a cheap student dorm. No TV's in the rooms and absolutely nothing to do or see nearby, the sole entertainment being the small TV in reception to fight over with the other guests. The saving grace is a large common kitchen/dining area, though it was pretty messy when I was there, the cleaner only comes once a day it seems. The noise from groups in the kitchen and reception/lounge areas is also a bit annoying.

Its saving grace is that its a fraction of the price of the ridiculously expensive hotels in the Keflavik/airport area and it is very close to the airport, less than 5 minutes drive away. Just make sure you arrive at the airport very early for your morning flight, all the flights from Iceland to Europe leave roughly the same time and it gets very busy. Furthermore, you're not missing much by staying in Keflavik itself, a very unimpressive and grim looking town.

I did like the touch of the hotel providing pre-made breakfasts too to take from the fridge in the morning.

Now if somebody was to set up a hotel in the Keflavik area offering reasonable mid-range accommodation at a reasonable mid-range price, they'd make a fortune.

  • Liked — Cheaper than the rest, close to airport, packed breakfasts to take away
  • Disliked — Hostel/student dorm feel, noise, untidy, not kept clean, isolated and nothing to do nearby

This place is very near the aiport (15 min walk) and wer used this place for two nights. The first was at the campsite. The campsite has no cooking facility but a lounge, shower and toilet. The guesthouse was our second night. Using this hotel was a way to spare one rental car day. We went to the airport and came back by foot.

This place is nice with a hot tub and free internet and a nice kitchen. There is also a lounge with a TV. They provide free transfer to the airport.

Eventhougth it is expensive (like everywhere in iceland) I would recommand this place.

We stayed there for one night at the end of a 15-day tour around Iceland and found it very practical to be so near the airport when having to leave on a flight at 7 in the morning.

The room, kitchen and bathroom were clean, you could even use the hot tub placed outside and it was very practical to be able to make your own breakfast at 5 a.m. because of the early flight.

It's no frills, but good enough for a night definitely.

Motel Alex is in walking distance from the airport (KEF). It is a road-side motel: clean and practical and practically empty in the winter. I was only there for 6 and a half hours.

Someone from the motel picked me up - I was the only one staying at the motel on the flight that arrived at 11:30pm, but the man waited for me and drove me in a minibus back to the motel. My room was on the ground floor. I did have to walk through the kitchen in order to get to the bathroom which could have been tiresome if I had stayed longer. As it was, I was the only guest I saw, so it was like having my own cottage. I could saunter around without offending any early breakfasters' sensibilities, and raid the fridge before I went to bed.

I had booked a single bed, but got an adequately uncramped twin room.

The kitchen again was clean. A basically-stocked fridge with fruit, milk, ham and cheese was ready for guests to help themselves from.

The reception area has a TV which can show flight information if you are departing from the motel or meeting someone from a flight. There are also a whole load of leaflets and maps to orientate yourself with.

In the morning I walked to the airport to meet a 6:30am flight with my girlfriend aboard. It was November and windy and rainy and dark, but not cold. The bracing walk across lunar terrain, lit by the moon (where else can you do that?) takes 25 minutes.

Motel Alex - functional, clean, and cheap (don't be put off by a slightly unwelcoming telephone manner if you ring them in advance). It serves its purpose but you can't spend more than one night there at a time: you need to meet your girlfriend at the airport, hire a car, and find some romance elsewhere in Iceland.
