Owner description: North Sailing is proud to be pioneers in whale watching in Iceland. We run and operate four traditional Icelandic oak boats, as well as three schooners, all of them environmentally friendly. Our customers can choose between our Original 3-hour- whale watching tour, which runs several times a day from April till October, or our schooner tours, which focus on whales plus puffins plus the sailing experience. Skjalfandi Bay, adjacent to our hometown Husavik, is known for its excellent whale sightings. We regularly see humpback whales and minke whales and the chances to see the white-beaked dolphin and the harbour porpoise are fairly high in the bay as well. Our success rate in the year 2013 was 99,1 %, but of course we are operating in wild nature and can only hope that the whales and dolphins continue to visit the bay. Protecting our environment and acting ecologically responsible is therefore a key element of our operations. Good to know: We provide warm overalls for all customers, free parking and wheelchair access to our boats. Our highly motivated staff is well trained and our customers' well being and safety is our highest priority when taking you out to encounter the marine wildlife first hand.

“Marvelous trip to Grimsey Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

We spent a WONDERFUL two days/one night with Captain Ollie and Nels aboard a wooden whaling schooner. The trip couldn't have been better! Be prepared to see beautiful scenery and animal life. We saw porpoises dancing in the water (sans) trainer, a great blue whale, minke and humpback. Captain Ollie took us for a zodiac ride around Grimsey Island where we saw more birds than we could count!!! Nels took us on a short hike where we were able to see Puffin up close. The folks who live on Grimsey invited us to share one of their festivals...much fun listening to the accordion player, children singing and to climb down a cliff to view the birds. If you go, plan to stay a night in Husavik and take a drive over to the Arbgyri (sp) Canyon.

“Wonderful Trip with North Sailing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2012

Had a wonderful experience on the Puffins and Whales Sailing excursion. The staff were very knowledgeable about the birds and whales and we loved the experience on the sailing boat Halidar. (Think that was the spelling!) High recommend this tour - getting to return to Husavik under full sail was an unbelievable experience, along with the whales!!

“Unforgettable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

We first went on this trip in June 2009 the sea was very rough and we didn't see a whale despite staying out an extra hour. Our tickets were marked so we could have a free trip next time. 3 years later our tickets were honoured. The sea was extremely rough again and it seemed we would be disappointed but about half way through the trip in the distance was a hump-back. we were close enough to see the spouting water with the naked eye but you would have needed binoculars or a good zoom lens to see it well. Later, from about the same distance we saw a blue whale and then a minky. We never did get close to them, but with the conditions it was a very exciting trip. We needed the overalls provided over our thick outer and inner coats and the chocolate and cinnamon roll was very welcome. The guide who kept a lookout was very good, telling us about the whales when we saw them, but not talking all the time so we could enjoy the ride; she was also helpful to those unfortunate enough to feel unwell.

Dear customer,

thank you for taking time to write your review, we highly appreciate it. We are glad to hear, that despite the rough sea you were able to enjoy the tour with us out on Skjálfandi Bay.
In each tour, the crew does their very best to locate and observe the whales, but of course Mother nature often plays the biggest part.
We welcome you back at any time, for yet another unique whale experience.

Best regards,
Huld (guide), team North Sailing.

“Humpbacks, blue whale and puffins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012 via mobile

Great trip. The crew is friendly and knowledgable. The captain took us right to the whales and got so close we could almost touch them. The price was reasonable for Iceland. We took a tour in the south and much prefer the trip in the north. Could not be more satisfied.

“Whale watch-Olafsfjordur- North Sailing Company”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2012

I wanted to make it to Husavik to see some whales. I couldn't make the entire drive so I stopped and did the whale watch watch in Olafsfjordur. This was June 26. I have done a few whale watches a few times in different places, so I expected 50/50. They are whales, you never know.

The day was very foggy. You couldn't see more than 100 meters. What I was most impressed with was the captain and first mate (both great guys and wish I spell their names) both said it was too foggy and would we mind extending our tour by an hour to find some whales. (by the way, gas is expensive). As soon as we all said yes sir, a humpback and her calf came to the top. No need to extend the tour!

We spent an hour very respectfully following them and it was a great experience. After we left them and found some great dolphins who played under the boat.

It was a great experience and you couldn't go wrong by booking with North SailIng. Great company and great people

Thanks

thank you for taking time to write our review, we do appreciate it. It is fantastic to read that you enjoyed our tour in Ólafsfjörður. In every tour our crew tries their very best to locate and observe the whales, but we must not forget that Mother nature also plays a big part.
We welcome you back at any time - either in Ólafsfjörður, or in Húsavík.
