We arrived in Husavik not intending to go whale watching as my wife is a very poor sailor. However the weather was so good and the sea so calm we decided to go. It was only 20 mins into the trip before we started seeing Humpback whales and continued with regular sightings, some very close, throughout the trip including at one point 2 whales together. The crew on the boat were always alert and informative, and the hot chocolate on the way back in was a great way to finish the trip. A great experience and one of the highlights of our Iceland holiday.

We went on a Big Whale and Puffin Watch, on a fast boat, in August. What impressed me most was the honesty and commitment of the staff. Prior to buying our tickets, the saleswoman told us that although the season had been bountiful with whales, no whales were seen that afternoon, and it was unknown whether that was a fluke or if they had moved out of range. She also said if we went out and didn't see any whales, we could take their regular whale watching cruise on another date for free. You can't get anymore above-board than that. The company further made a good impression by staying out longer than promised and detouring out again to see a whale when we were returning to port. The whale watching itself was OK; we saw minke whales, harbor porposes, and a humpback leaping out of the water. The vessel was a fast boat which is like a motorized raft. Sitting so close to the water was helpful for seeing swimming puffins though I still need binoculars, and zooming around the harbor was fun. However, you had to staddle a pummel horse as a seat and, therefore, couldn't move around. If a tall person was seated in front of you, you couldn't reposition yourself for better viewing. I would book with Gentle Giants again, but would take a cruise with a bigger boat where I could move around.

I took a trip as a group (Horizonty.pl) in July to watch whales. We had great time, saw some whales and many dolphins so close to the boat! :-) We saw flying and "landing"puffins as well, they are so cute!

Additionally the information brochure we were provided was really good - informative, interesting and concise. I wish I could go to another trip next time!

I'd skip the whale "watching" tours in Husavik. They were more like whale searching tours. The women selling the tickets later admitted that that no whales had been spotted for the past couple of weeks. We went on August 13th which should be high season.

Thank you for sharing your experience!

Yes - we have had a few days now in August, not weeks, with difficult conditions and some tours did not see anything. This could be due to the warm weather conditions that have been in Húsavík the last days. There is however, always a chance of seeing whales even though the conditions have been difficult, as the whale status in the bay can change very fast and no two tours the same.

We have been incredibly lucky with humpback whales the whole season besides those few days. And like always in nature, it is unpredictable. In case of tours with no whales, passengers are welcome to join another tour for free, valid whenever.

It seems like more life is coming into the bay again and yesterday our boats encountered four humpback whales together with minke whales and dolphins. I hope that you will be able to sail with us again out on Skjálfandi Bay – and encounter the gentle giants of the ocean.

Best regards from Húsavík,
Daniel Annisius

A really amazing experience, despite being not quite a bargain. We had not relly expected to get THAT close to the whales, with one of the hunchbacks leaping out of the water and even diving under our boat, thus turning out to be quite an entertaining genius.
