Fantastic location - a completely private valley, with the picturesque farm of Árhólar at the end. Very close to Mývatn as the crow flies, but it will take you almost an hour to get there driving up the valley and back down again, depending on the weather and the state of the roads! But that's exactly what we wanted - a private place for our honeymoon, and it was absolutely perfect. The cabins are new and very well-appointed, everything inside white in tasteful modern Scandinavian design. We shopped beforehand and had everything with us for all meals for 3 days. There's a bar-fridge, microwave and a 2-burner electric stove, as well as reverse-cycle air-conditioning/heating and wifi, but no phone coverage, which suited us perfectly. The weather never cleared up enough for us to spend time walking in the valley, but the clouds disappeared one night for us to see the northern lights. We drove a minute back down the valley to where there were no houses at all, and there's no better place to look up at the heavens. There are 4 cabins side by side, just behind the farm, and plenty of sheep to keep you company. If you want to be absolutely alone in the wilderness in a rustic cabin, this won't be enough for you, but it was exactly right for us, and we cannot recommend it highly enough!
Can’t get enough of Iceland’s beautiful nature, remoteness and silence? The Laxárdalur cabins are located near the Myvatn area on a sheep farm. Guðrun and her family, who have always lived in the valley, own 300 sheep that can be seen running around in the area. The valley also has a rich folklore culture and tradition, and a river that is full of trout, if you have a special fishing licence. The cabins are beautifully decorated and very comfortable and have a kitchenette.
We visited the farm around the réttir period, when all sheep are collected from the surrounding mountains and valleys. So when we arrived, there were A LOT of sheep and they all seemed very agitated, which was very fun and spectacular to see!
