“Good accommodations, but the location and hot tubs - superb, go there”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

We, a family of four (my wife and myself and two children 25 and 20 years old) stayed at guesthouse Hoffel at the end of April, while it was still freezing, and the temperature at evening (see below) was still a little below zero (while at night it dropped well below zero). The sunset occurred at 22:00 approximately. The guesthouse itself is situated near the family house, and it has two stories. We, the only guests at that night, stayed up at the villa. The rooms are big and comfortable, warm and clean. The design is quite archaic an the kitchen shows old and tired features, although quite well equipped. All in all, it was still a very convenient place to stay. However, the very best reasons to stay there is its remoteness secluded from almost any other visible settelments, the very nearby glacier, leading to the enormous Vantajokull, and the magnificent nature hot tubs which we tried late at early night, where we definitely enjoyed every of it moment although it was really freezing. Definitely a great stay! Tips: (a) Ask for the rooms upstairs, although you have to climb the stairs. (b) The nature hot tubs are free for those who stay at Guesthouse Hoffel, but others may use it too, for app. 10.-$. Don't Miss!!! (c) If you scheduled to stay off-season, check with the owners that the hot tubs are ready for use, otherwise you would have to wait for them to clean and prepare it for you.

We spent a great night at Hoffell guesthouse. The owner has welcomed us kindly and has explained to us everything in the guesthouse.
The view was awesome, wonderfull mountains and blue glacier tongue.
We slept very well, the beds were really comfortable.
And in the morning the owner brought us a good cake with some bread.
We have tried the hot pot, we didn't see the great view around, because of the night, but it was really nice anyway :)

Thank you so much ;)

This is going to be my most difficult review so far.
The owner was very friendly and helpful and shuffled rooms when we arrived, so we would have kitchen access and could cook the fish we had bought.
And when approaching, you will notice the great location with the glacier landscape around. Hoffell glacier is less than 4km away and from some rooms you can see it nicely.

But then again, you see it behind an old shabby building which takes most of your view (see my pictures) and when you look straight out of your window (at least in our room), this building and some dirt is all you see. Speaking of our room: it was very small, with minimum furniture. Rather a place to sleep than to be when you are awake.
Unfortunately it also had a quite heavy farm-like smell when we were there. It was only the room, not the kitchen or the outside areas. The room was perfectly clean, though.

Luckily there was the kitchen, a small but nice place to be and also to get in touch with other guests. But the equipment was very limited, e.g. there was only one small pan where the Teflon coating was completely scratched.

One combined WC/shower room for four or five bedrooms on the upper floor can lead to some waiting time when people take showers.

The description on the Hoffell web page does not fit our house and the photo also depicts a different building in the neighborhood (which seemed to also belong to the guesthouse), so maybe we were in a sort of secondary building which is used when the other one is fully booked?

Breakfast was "take from the fridge whatever you need and do it yourself" - and the choice in the fridge was limited, e.g. no real cheese, just that artificial cream cheese. But then again the owner brought delicious freshly homemade bread.

You get free "tickets" for the Hotpots which are operated by the guesthouse (but can be and are also visited by other tourists and locals). A great thing to relax after a long day. They are 500m down the road, but there are changing rooms, so you can dry there to not freeze if you choose to walk back at night.

So what is the final conclusion?
All in all this is a good place and I could imagine going there again. But there are too many "but"'s to give a four-star rating (which Tripadvisor labels as "very good"). Compared to the other 11 guesthouses on our trip there were some things not so good and still the price of some others was quite a bit lower.

Room Tip: There may be different buildings, but in the building we were (the one also depicted in the photos f...

We stayed here for one night and enjoyed it. It was very clean, the owner was friendly, our room was bright and sunny and - best of all - the location was beautiful. We stayed in the family room, with room for four people. One of the single-size beds was a mattress on the floor, but it was a large room.

Just a left turn from Iceland's road 1, just before Hofn, and in a few minutes we were at a farm at the foot of a mountain. This place gave us a warm and friendly welcome. Anything - just to ask. We'd booked a double room and it was both pretty and spotless. We were 3 steps away from our car, had a choice of tables inside and out and there were 2 shower rooms and a mini kitchen shared by 4 bedrooms.
We thought this place great value compared to other places in Iceland.
The lady had left fresh milk and apple and orange juice in the fridge and there were teabags and coffee. This was all renewed in the morning with homemade bread and jams for breakfast along with cereals.
After walking to the Hoffell glacier and lagoon, a 3 km amble, so quiet after the bustle at the major sites, but for all that, a mini and empty version of Jokulsarlon, we were delighted to use their hot tubs and relax. It was quiet and sheltered by a huge rock, but there were changing rooms, and wc and shower facilities.
We didn't take up the offer of ATV tours, but they did sound interesting.

Though the guesthouse does look a bit shabby on the outside, it is not at all shabby on the inside. We had a very pleasant stay here. The rooms are comfy and a good size, you can use the hot spring baths that the owners of the guesthouse also maintain for free and are used by both locals and tourists. Breakfast was really lovely. Not too much choice but the lady who runs the place bakes her own bread and makes her own jams and it was very tasty.
