Highly recommend you take the boat/duck ride into the Iceberg filled lagoon near Hofn Iceland. We visited the lagoon in October so it was a cold trip, but it was well worth the discomfort of bundling up. You board a duck vehicle and they take you over a short rough road down into the lagoon. A spotter leads the way for the duck to navigate through the lagoon around massive icebergs. It was the most remarkable trip we had in Iceland, and a very highly recommended attraction. Excellent.

We went out on the amphibian boat as the zodiac's were not running when we visited in October. You are out for about 40 minutes with a guide who provides you with a wealth of information. you also get to try 1000 ice! Cost is 3,500 kroner per adult.

You do not need to go out onto the lagoon to experience this place, it is a wonderfully tranquil place just to sit and watch the iceburgs move around, the scenerary is constantly changing. At high tide you will also see seals in the lagoon hunting fish.

There is a small cafe on sight, ok if you like fish soup or waffle. We actually ended up having to go back to skaftafell (Fresnes) to find anything to eat so please bear this in mind if visiting out of peak season.

Do make sure you visit the beach across the other side of the road. Here you will see all the smaller icebergs which have 'escaped' the lagoon and are scattered on the beach and at the shore.

Due to the great reviews we booked this tour a month before we travelled. They couldn't do the date we requested so we changed 4 hotels and travelled 270km that morning as we knew this wasn't to be missed. When we got there the guy in the cafe told us they stopped 2 weeks ago and we weren't the only people turning up with confirmation slips from bookings. No phone call, no e-mail. Completely gutted. Thankfully there was another company which was doing tours all day for cheaper so we got to see the sights, but would be very wary about booking zodiac as a simple e-mail was obviously too below them.

The zodiac boat tour on the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon operated by Ice Lagoon Adventure Cruise was the highlight of our five day Iceland trip.
The experience was truly otherworldly as we motored out several kilometers to the glacier and then floated among spectacular ice formations. Our guide was wonderful – very professional, personable and knowledgeable, and spent ample time at various points so everyone could take it all in, capture lots of pictures and ask questions.
You can buy tickets at the “Zodiac Boat Tours” trailer parked on one side of the small bridge. Avoid the amphibian boats. They go for volume of passengers and are very touristy. The difference in price is worth every penny. The Ice Lagoon boats go out farther into the lagoon, right up to the glacier, and allow you to experience the lagoon’s full magnificence. Ice Lagoon’s boats also stay out for an hour vs a half an hour for the amphibian boat (we were out for nearly an hour and a half) and is just a more personal experience carrying only a few passengers.
When we got out to the glacier we had the entire lagoon to ourselves except for the seal sunning himself on a floating chunk of ice. It was one of the most serene settings I’ve ever experienced and a must do when in Iceland.

Our trip on the lagoon was exceptionally good, the Zodiac trips are a great way of seeing the icebergs and getting close up to the glacier. The staff are very friendly and helpful and make sure your trip is a good one. We were well kitted out in floatation suits which kept us warm and dry. We felt safe in the heavy duty Zodiac boat. What I liked best of all was the unhurriedness of the tour, at no time were we rushed in fact we were indulged with time. Our guide was relaxed, exceptionally knowledgeable and informative. He didn’t realise we had been on the water for an hour when we were still at the glacier. At the point he realised he did speed up a little but it did not spoil our trip and he still ensured we got the best of what the lagoon has to offer.
The lagoon is in a fantastic setting with the glacier and mountains as a backdrop. It is peaceful and when we were there very calm. The icebergs are fascinating with different shapes, sizes and colours. Although the icebergs can be seen from the road and on paths by the side of the lagoon, the experience is enhanced and taken to a different level on a Zodiac tour, plus you get right up to the glacier and benefit from the knowledge of a guide. This is an excellent trip and very realistically priced.
