We stayed in a house with shared bathrooms. The rooms were large enough, with comfortable beds and reading lights and the bathroom facilities were good. The house also had a large lounge/ dining room with full cooking facilities, basic Icelandic tv and small library and you could cater for tea and coffee with no trouble. Perhaps buy milk at a service station to make sure there is some.

The restaurant was fine. The choices were not extensive (3 or so each course) but everything was well cooked and presented throughout three courses, and the multicultural staff were fun (Latvia, Czech Republic, Italy and the Icelandic patrons). Breakfast was ample and easy going. The freshly baked bread was good. We visited the exhibition at the museum and it was well worth seeing.

This is THE hotel for Jokulsarlon which must be seen at both dawn and dusk and the ride back to the glaciers was easy. We also went east to Hofn and there were some great views in all directions. Stay a couple of nights and move around the area.

We were on a photo tour and our guide (who has some of his photos hanging their restaurant) booked us into this place. It's spread out on a small farm on the ocean. The main building doubles as a restaurant and a museum (and is decorated on the highway side like a shelf of giant books..rather different!). The rooms are in multiple buildings across the farm and appear to all be 1-story buildings. Ours was the 20-30 numbered rooms nearest the ocean and the barn (which did have some sheep in it). These rooms (a least the 30-block) have en-suite bathrooms with nice showers. The beds were quite comfortable but were two twins pushed together. The floors seemed to be a wood-grain plastic laminate but were warm as we assume they were heated with an underfloor system. We weren't cold in early April even though it snowed one night but we couldn't find any thermostat. They do like you to take your shoes off in the entry hall of the building and leave them on a small rack. Breakfast (the only meal that we ate while staying here) was good consisting of some dry cereals, various rolls, cakes, and breads (they baked a multigrain bread there that we really liked), jellies and other spreads, and quite an assortment of sliced meats and cheeses (and some hard-boiled eggs and a few vegetables.). Don't plan on watching TV; it worked fine but we had all of five channels showing the same thing. The Internet worked well up in the restauant (and was free) but we only had a 1-10% signal in the room. Ran us about $130 USD per night for the 2 of us with the breakfast included. Overall, we'd stay there again if in the area and wanted to be about 15 minutes away from Jokulsarlon.

An excellent 4 nights really away from it all ... yet close to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon area. Excellent view of the Northern Lights from the hotel grounds as well as at the lagoon. Food was really excellent and rooms clean and spacious. I was on a photogrpahy workshop (and no ... we were not noisy!) and it proved an ideal location for discussions in the comunal area in our accommodation block. ALL staff were extremely helpful. If/when I go back top Iceland this is a definite on my "must stay at" list.

We stayed two nights at Hali and wished we could have stayed longer. We had a room with a large group on a photography workshop and the owners kindly gave us a discount "in case our room was noisy" (it wasn't). The room was spacious, warm, comfortable and clean. The shared bathroom was equally clean and no real inconvenience. The well-equipped kitchen was perfect, especially as we were spending all our time out at odd hours trying to see the Northern Lights. Breakfast was served in the general restaurant and all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast itself was amazing - very good value for money. And of course, the location was hard to beat! We will definitely stay again.

We were without accommodation one night when a place we'd booked for two nights was so disappointing we left after one night. We wanted to head for Jokulsarlon, and some travelers told us about Hali's. We called for a reservation and were disappointed to find they were fully-booked that night. But... the friendly fellow at Hali's gave us the number for his neighbor with a hotel - Gerdi's. He suggested we call Gerdi's to reserve for the night, and walk over to Hali's for dinner. That meal at Hali's was our most memorable in Iceland. We were told to look for the huge "book shelf" on the ring road, and sure enough there it was--a bookshelf façade at least eighty feet long faces the road, loaded with gigantic books. It is a striking exterior with the ocean right behind it. Inside the door were a large number of pairs of shoes--odd even given the custom in Iceland to remove shoes in a private home. Evidently Hali's has a following that respects this custom even in a restaurant setting. But then it became clear that Hali's supports the seekers of northern lights to an extent like no other. After the shoes; what we noticed was an eye-level magnetometer set up to let folks know what the forecast was for northern lights. The restaurant was clean, with tons of natural light and great views of ocean and sky. Their specialty is arctic char from their own farm. This "farm" is in tanks across the road next to the glacier and the fish obviously thrive in the glacial melt water which is constantly supplied to them. That arctic char meal was so good that we drove back the next night for another dinner at Hali's. After placing your dinner request, you can saunter through to the art exhibition in the next room, and on to the cultural museum. This was all in one building with the restaurant called Hali's or Café Hali. Next time, we hope to stay here as well as eat here. The restaurant crowd was wonderful; one gentleman loaned us a tripod to enable us to better photograph the amazing northern lights we saw just down the road at Jokulsarlon. We were grateful for the serendipity that led us to the folks at Hali's.

Hali Country Hotel is ok if you’d like somewhere to stay near the Jokulsarlon lagoon. It’s just ten minutes drive away. However, there is not much else here. The hotel rooms are distributed amongst a range of smaller houses near the sea. However, please note that there are communal bathrooms and the rooms are showing some signs of age.

The hotel offers a dinner selection which was appreciated, given the remote location, plus a very good buffet breakfast.

I stayed here for four nights from 13/03 with a group on a photography trip. For us the location was ideal, by a lagoon with mountain veiws to the front and sea views to the rear. We were close to the ice beach and other lagoons with ice formations. But best of all we were close to excellent places from which to view and photograph the Aurora Borealis.

The rooms (for 1 person) were clean and spacious but the single beds were very narrow, maybe easy to fall out of. Don't be put of by the look from the outsise which is a bit reminiscent of a prison block. We had a communal area with tea and coffee facilities. The food was good if not that varied (you better like fish!) and the staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming.
