“seafront hotel away from city center”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

relatively inexpensive hotel (because it is far from city center) and goes a little overboard on the viking theme

This was our first overseas trip with our 3 month old son so we stayed at this hotel for 6 nights as a base to see Iceland. We stayed here (in the seaview room) also as it was a bit cheaper than Reykjavik. The location was great - close to shops and a few km from the capital. There was a slight mix up in the rooms but once sorted we found our room to be very comfortable and spacious even with a cot. Blinds were also good for the midnight sun. Breakfast was your typical european breakfast with pickled fish on the side. I did like the viking themed room - personally I didn't feel it to be over the top, but maybe I've stayed in a different room to other reviewers.
The best thing was the restaurant next door. It wasn't that cheap - we spent about 80 quid for a 3 course meal and a few drinks, but the food was so good I tried to fit in as much as I could and didn't eat again until the next afternoon. Overall most staff were friendly and helpful.
It was slightly noisy as our room was right on the road, but it was only noticeable and didn't keep anyone awake. We would stay in this room again.

We stayed in the hotel for our last night in Iceland. We were not very impressed. The check in was fine, we got a lady came from their restaurant to give us a key. We got room no 4. Very small room, with two single beds and a tiny bathroom. The room was so small that it was nearly impossible to open baggage on floor. The window faced quite busy road and the restaurant, so we were bothered by street noise quite much. The walls were very thin so you could hear everything from neighboring rooms. We took a look at the hot tub but it was not anyhow tempting. It was quite dirty with no privacy as some rooms were facing the area. The bathroom was tiny and towels had their best times over. Blinders were not very efficient as it was still very much light in the room when we wanted to sleep. The last "best" thing was breakfast. It started at 7:30. We got there at 8 o'clock and there was practically nothing to eat. Just some rest of old bread and some jam and stone hard butter. All in all this was not any nice experience and I regret that I booked a stay there. I normally do not complain and can accept quite much but this time it was way toooo much, so if you like to get a good night sleep and a decent breakfast, look somewhere else. Iceland is a place of many nice hotels so do not be fooled like we were.

Two years ago I was looking for something special outside of Reykjavík and closer to the airport. And I found this hotel - the hotel Viking. Whenever I come to Iceland now I stay here.
The rooms are very unique, nice and clean. The hot pot in the back is nice to relax the muscles after a long walk and with a little luck you might even see the northern lights while relaxing in the warm water.
The staff is really nice and if you have a problem they do everything to help.

The smell of the hot water was a bit hard to get used to at first, but it is straight from the nature so it is part of Iceland. And there is always the possibility to make hot water in the room for a tea or for brushing the teeth.

We stayed here 1 night, before we took our flight back to US. I agree with previous reviewers: the hot tub is dirty - bugs and leaves and dirty and the hotel decor is bit over-the-top Viking themed. I can see where kids would like it, but adults traveling without kids can do better then stay here. The woman receptionist in the evening was friendly, the man during the dayshift - not so much. The breakfast was probably the lowest quality of our trip, but was ok. I guess that is the best description of the place - adequate, wouldn't stay here again.

Not the friendliest, cleanest or most affordable, but at least the kitchiest.
The kids loved it.

We travelled as a couple in july 2011 and stayed in the viking village hotel. I would definitely recommend this place although it's not quite in the center of the reykjavik. This can also be a good thing because it was very quiet to sleep at nights. ( I don't know it the same can be said on some of the hotels in the center).

The room we had was big and clean. The breakfast was simple but very good. Staff was friendly. Hotel has also some free parking spots which is great if you are traveling by car. There is one free computer to be used for free internet in the lobby. There was no free wifi in the rooms as what I was aware of.

The only slight negative was that there is a sauna / outdoor dipping-pool but these did not seem to be functioning at the time we were there.

The viking theme in the hotel / restaurant can appeal to some people or you could find it a bit tacky. Great hotel for the value anyway.
