“Reliable and splendid geysir”

The Strokkur Geisir is the highlight of this walk around various bubbling pits. It erupts regularly and you never have to wait more than 10 minutes to see it perform. Guides tell you that the best photo is to obtained from some distance away, so that you can capture the full height of the expulsion. We much preferred watching it at close quarters. At the key moment a beautiful blue bubble appears at the base, vanishing in a second as the steam and boiling water is shot upwards to an impressive height. You can watch this from so close that it is in a way somewhat better than Yellowstone's Old Faithful.

In mid-winter the walk around the park can be tricky with various difference types of ice and snow to be negotiated. We held on to each other and walked very cautiously, warned by the sight of two or three other visitors crashing to the icy ground.

The Great Geysir is of historical importance and locals stop to look at the circle of volcanic mud with some reverence. It is the first site that you pass on the long walk around the geysir park. When you continue walking, you pass various bubbling pits and can see Strokkur erupting in the distance, with great regularity. It's a worthwhile place to visit. It was unseasonably cold (-11C) when we were there and the ice was very slippery. We saw two tourists fall badly and hit their head on the ice.

We enjoyed wandering down the path of small and medium geisers. The area feels a bit like the moon - holes in the ground with steam coming out. The main geisers erupts and then you are engulfed in sulfur-smelling smoke. The gift shop was great and there is an eatery as well. The food was good and it was great to relax indoors for a few mintues.

Far from being a wonderful sight it was more like a steamy belch of steam from the ground the day we visited. Actually some of the smaller bubbling water spouts were much nicer.

I am sure that some have seen it billowing largely (as detailed on here) but for us it was a totally damp squib the sort of thing you look at and say 'Is that it?'

Geysir was no longer active, but Strokkur erupts every 5-10 min. The height of the eruption varies.

There are other geysirs but I did not get to see them erupt during the 30 min I was there. There is a information center "Geysir-Center" that has a cafeteria and a gift shop. There is also a theater that shows a short film about the area and the geysirs.
