Beautiful place. Visited as part of a tour with our cruise ship (over priced - book locally!) would definitely recommend. It's a budding photographers dream place

You come upon the falls suddenly in the middle of a plain, where a river which has been meandering along suddenly drops over a rift in the earth - one of the many signs in Iceland that the island is slowly being pulled apart by tectonic plate movements. The falls (in three separate ones, two wide and one narrow) are only 15 metres high but quite wide and dramatic, and by clambering over moorland and a lava field from the nearby road you can get close up and take wonderful pictures from the high ground downstream, or right from the lip of the falls if you go a bit farther. Safety note: wear good walking shoes for a firm footing, as there is spray on the rocks and no fences between you and the river. The view of the mountains all round, veiled in cloud, is spectacular. There is a cafe with toilets and souvenir shop about half a km away.

Godafoss - God's waterfall, one of the largest in Iceland, fed from a glacial thaw, falls through several stages into a river that roars away through the landscape. The paths are safe and not too uneven. Amazingly beautiful in good weather, can't say what it would be like in fog or rain.

The falls are not the best in Iceland, but have an interesting story. Apparently, around 1000 AD, the local chief decided that Icelanders should adopt the christiam faith. When it was accepted, he went home and gathered all the statues of the pagan gods and threw them into the waterfall. Godafoss means "Waterfall of the Gods". The falls themselves are a bit better than many other falls in Iceland and there is a pleasant walk alongside the river to cross over the bridge to the tearoom on the other side.
