“It's all in the detail!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a 10-day tour around Iceland.
When I was told we were staying in a converted old people's home I was a little surprised and apprehensive. However, this was totally misplaced.
The main accommodation is all on one level. Each room is slightly different with a handbasin. There are several bathrooms, again all slightly different. And yes they are still the "old people" ones but this means they are spacious. I never had to wait to use a bathroom.
The lounge area has a well stocked honesty bar, comfy sofas, games and books, There is also a fantstic view over the fjord and a telescope to make the most of it. We had a lot of wet kit and the owners were happy for us to hang it in the warm corridor downstairs.
There is also a hot tub in the back garden - an ideal place to chill at the end of the day.
The owners have an amazing eye for design. There are lots of beautiful little touches that I would hate to list here and spoil the surprise for you.
Lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting.

Oh - and check out the chilckens sleeping in the trees in the front garden!!

Room Tip: They're all different so just enjoy the little details.

The guest house is modern, beautifully decorated. Rooms are spacious. Beds comfortable. Communication was great. On a good night you can see the Northern Lights from the hot pool in the back paddock. Very very clean and well equipt. Breakfast was the best we had in Iceland and the level in general is high so this is a big acheiement in my eyes. There are 2 farm dogs that are excited to greet you on arrival. Last but not least I left my phone behind and they very kindly went out of their way to post it back to me in London.

Thanks again!

We stayed at Skjaldarvik for 3 nights and totally loved it! This place is just outside Akureyri in a large farm type setting. The rooms are spacious, common areas are large and well maintained and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a lot of horses on the farm and the two dogs are adorable. Would definitely return and recommend to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lower level - it's easier to access the cafe and common areas from there.

First off, this lovely guest house is just North of Akureyri- you get the peacefulness of a remote location, but you are very close to the city. The guest house was originally a retirement home which you will see reflected in the wide doorways, hallways, and bathrooms. It has been redone entirely with shabby chic theme- lace decorations, white washed furniture, and lots of candles. The owners are so lovely and their homemade breads and jams start the morning off right! Stay here if you can :)

After a very long day of driving from the airport in Keflavik, This was such a welcoming sight after a long day of travel. It is a family run business nestled right on the beautiful fjord. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The owner really tried to give each wing of the guest house a distinctive theme which was so cute. The hot tube outside was simply awesome. As we unwound in the warm water. (most hot tubes and swimming pools in Iceland are kept at a lower temp then hot tubes or Jacuzzi's in the states. So initially you get in thinking it could be warmer but you must accept the fact that we have it wrong in the US and Iceland has got it right) because it was so relaxing! as we were unwinding in the tube we could see their horses frolicking in the field before us. Such a surreal experience. I must also note that the dinner that was served was among my most absolute favorite meals on the entire trip. This place is a definite must!

The rural location is bit of a departure from standard accomodations in the city and the area is serene and peaceful in the evenings (even though we tended to arrive late, get right to bed, and leave early in the morning). However, I wouldn't recommend it for sleeping in since the uncarpeted hallways echo every footstep and every closing door, so you're waking up when everyone else wakes up whether you like it or not.

Breakfast was quite good but there is a rush around 8am and seating can get tight.

Since this is a former retirement home, bathroom are huuuuuge.

The dog out front is not dead - it just has the uncanny ability to lie on its back for as long as it takes to get someone to scratch its belly.

The wifi worked but the signal was weak. If this is important to you, ask to be near the router as the building is pretty big.

Room Tip: Get to breakfast early... or late... just try to avoid the rush. Get to bed early like everyone else...

We stayed one night in a room with a shared bathroom. The guest house was easy to find, just off the ring road having passed through Akureyri. It's in a very peaceful location so you can get a really good nights sleep. The guest house has been very tastefully converted from a retirement home and it is spotlessly clean throughout.

Upon check in we were showed around the guest house which has a hot tub, bar (self service) and restaurant.

The shared bathroom (with shower cublicle) was very close to our room and appeared to be shared with 4 rooms which wasn't a problem. The bathroom had a supply of fresh towels in addition to those left in our room. The room itself had 2 single beds which were very comfortable, a wardrobe and sink. Free wi-fi was available but at times the signal in the room was weak. A mac is available close to reception for customer use.

The included breakfast was sufficient, cereals, yoghurt, bread, cold meats, fruit and tea / coffee was available throughout the day. The hot chocolate was lovely!

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the guest house to others that are looking for a peaceful evening.

Just one thing, if you're thinking of eating at the greifinn (as suggested in the Lonely Planet) we tried on a Saturday night, as expected it was busy so the server added our names to the waiting list which should have taken about 20 minutes. Locals who arrived after us were seated before us, it would appear that the Greifinn prefer local customers rather than tourists so we left (after waiting 25 minutes and around 4 tables, without reservations were seated ahead of us) and gave our money to another establishment.
