I chose to stay at the Icelandair Hotel for 2 nights durning our trip to Akureyri because I thought it would was the best hotel in town. Unfortunately it was just average and ended up at the bottom of our list after staying at 3 other hotels in Iceland. The staff were just ok - they welcomed us and sent us to our room...didn't much care that it was our honeymoon. I understand that we're not the only honeymooners out there, but we were given much better treatment at more than one other place. The room is crowded but did the trick. As many others have said, the washroom(s) is the weirdest part. The sink and toilet are on one side of the bed and the shower on the other side. My husband and I laughed a couple of times about the situation a new couple might find themselves in with zero privacy in the bathroom...the door hardly even shuts all the way and the glass is just frosted so it's pretty much see through.
Another disappointing thing was that we asked a front desk person on our second day if it would be possible to see the northern lights from near the hotel and if so had they been spotted yet this fall. Much to our dismay, she said yes...last night! We had just come from another hotel that actually calls to wake guests up if they see the lights, so we assumed that it was a curtesy that other hotels would provide but unfortunately we slept right through them. The lady suggested we come down that evening to check but we didn't end up seeing any northern lights at all on our trip.
There are also several other hotels closer to down town that are easier to walk to. This hotel is within walking distance of many things for sure, it's just that you have to walk up a long steep hill to get back. We're in good shape and did several hours of hiking each day in Iceland, but during our stay there it was far enough that we chose to drive down the hill both nights to eat supper. We opted not to pay the almost $20 for breakfast and ate at a cafe in town instead but the menu did look good.
All in all, the hotel was clean, fairly comfortable, new, and the staff were pretty friendly...it just wasn't a wow experience that we found elsewhere in Iceland.
