The hotel is probably one of the nicer ones in Iceland. The room was very aesthetic and price was ok for the kind of room you get. The location is really good and the rooms have TVs inside them. Overall a pleasing experience to stay at this hotel.

Very elegant, appealing design for both rooms and the lobby, which easily tempts you to sit a while and take a drink (generous bar snacks, by the way). However, rooms are rather on the smaller side and if you lay on the bed you could pretty much hold hands with the person sitting on the toilet! There is just a sliding (though frosted) glass door to the bathroom so it really isn't very private. Comfortable beds and duvets. You can walk into town easily and the swimming baths are next door. Felt it was a little on the expensive side but still one of the more appealing hotels of our stay. Ate in the the restaurant and the food and service was very good.

The hotel was very clean and in a great location- just a short walk to the restaurants and shops by the water. It was perfect for us because it had free parking. The only reason I put 4 stars is because the staff wasn't that helpful (we tried asking about excursions and dinner recommendations) and the food at the restaurant was overpriced. But the room, facilities, and location were excellent. Would strongly recommend it.

The hotel was completed in 2011. It is bright, airy and very comfortable. There is a large lounge with open fire. Good breakfast. All amenities. A little way out of town, but everything is well within walking distance. Some rooms have views to the fjord. Would recommend for a few days whilst visiting the North of Iceland.

Icelandair Hotel Akureyri is has real charm, which is certainly influenced my the magic of Akureyri. But, on its own it is a hotel property with real charm and lots of thoughtful details, which you will notice when you first walk in. The lobby is cool and contemporary, with an Iceland-design influence.

Outside the back of the hotel is a lovely garden are with sitting areas, blankets and a wood-burning fire every night; a great place to hand out and have a cocktail or hot chocolate.

The rooms were very, very pleasant. The color palette is warm and cool and everything is modern and comfortable. But the best thing about the rooms are the sweeping views of the mountains that frame this northern city; there is simply something magical about those views and I would say that they are worth the cost of the room all by themselves.

We had a nice dinner in the downstairs restaurant, Aurora. The meal included a nice salad, and roasted arctic char with roasted potatoes and a cauliflower puree. Tasty.

Do yourself a favor and go to Akureyri, in some ways it is the "Iceland" experience you may be searching for.

There's more here than you might think from looking online. Clean, stylish, inviting - everywhere you look there's a story. Don't miss the subtle dining area downstairs and the wind-shaded sitting area. The web says the pool's close, it's more like 30 seconds away, and the views are unbeatable and totally unlike Reykjavik.

More details:
After a few days in Reykjavik, (the only place I've stayed before), we took a 45m flight to Akureyri. Unlike a domestic flight in the US, it's easy. Buy your ticket, get on, buckle up, fly. On the flight, I got to see some snowy spots and fjords in the middle of Iceland (from a distance - enjoyable but forget the camera). In Akureyri, the drive to the Icelandair hotel is short. (All drives in town are short).

First impressions:
Looks better than the picture. I wasn't thrilled with the photo online, but was happily surprised when we pulled up. The lobby reflects the ski heritage of the area and has nostalgic images of some Danish chaps (Iceland was under the Danish monarchy until 1944) who were doing weather studies way (way) back in the black and white days. Oh, and the lobby is also the lounge and self-serve wine bar!

The rooms (I saw mine and one other) have big windows and views of either the fjord or the mountainside. Here on May 18 2013, it's bright and rather warm (52 at 9:30).

Dinner at the hotel was great. Fish (don't remember what kind) with a thin layer of grilled bread with potatoes, greens, avocado. I'm not great with describing food in detail, but it was very good.

Internet is free, which is a nice option if you want to watch movies! English language TV is limited; though it wasn't really missed because there's plenty to do, and still daylight at midnight this time of year.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 503 - it's got views on two sides and is next to a common (bus mostly unused) c...

My husband & I stayed at this property for 2 nights in December of 2012. We had an upgraded room, which is a bit larger than a standard room and had a nice view of the ski area. The room was clean & comfortable. We really loved the two twin size duvets! However, I found the room layout a bit odd - the bathroom is right behind the head of the bed - which does not afford for much privacy.
