“Nice place”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

We were recommended this guesthouse for a 1 night stay whilst doing the Diamond Circle.

Didn't quite live up to expectations but not too bad.

I think/suspect all the excellent reviews were written during summer visits,
we stayed there last week and things change "out of season" somewhat it appears.

When we arrived we were shown to our room,
perfectly adequate for our needs.

We then inquired about dinner,
restaurant not open other than for breakfast in September!

Now that turned out to be a blessing as we then went looking for somewhere in Akureyri (see separate review!),
however on return from Akureyri,
we wanted a cup of tea,
could find the kettle,
plenty of tea bags/coffee, etc,
but no cups and no-one to ask as the hotel isn't manned in the evening/overnight!

As I say room adequate enough,
breakfast in the morning was where this place redeemed itself!

All local produce and very tasty and filling,
the gent on duty was very knowledgeable about the food,
and very friendly (opposite of gent we'd met the night before who I don't think wanted to be there!).

In conclusion would we stay here again,
yes but would clarify a few things on arrival!

Stayed here one night last week. Staff very friendly and helpful. Needed a printer and staff went home to get one for us.

Had an evening meal of the best lamb we have ever eaten. Chef was a very interesting and helpful gentleman. Breakfast was more than sufficient. Rooms were excellent and really clean. Hot tub was super. Beautiful views.

Room Tip: Rooms great

We had a great 3 days at Ongulsstadir. We were given two connecting rooms which were very nice. The food was excellent and home cooked every day. The owner made sure to cook traditional Icelandic things such as a roast leg of lamb. The farm is in a lovely situation south of Akureyri and it was great sitting in the hot tub watching the sun (briefly!) set behind the mountains across the valley. A very friendly place and thoroughly recommended!

Slightly out of town so you do need a car but set on the side of the fjiord with the most amazing views especially from the hot tub !! Rooms are a decent size with comfortable beds, good showers etc. Service consistently good over a four night stay and if we needed anything all we had to do was ask. Breakfast was normal buffet type but included home made breads, jams and fish pate all were very good. Dinner was included and again home cooked meals to a good standard. As previous review said only one choice but there was a veggie option and they also cooked a one off special for my partner as she didn't like the main course. Free wifi and as for the hot tub ... Fabulous !! One small suggestion ... We went whe watching from across the fjiord rather than the normal spot of Husavik. Fabulous experience with Huganes seeing dolphins, porpoise and a very friedly humpback. We even had the opportunity to catch a few cod on the way back.

Oh my God! One of the most romantic places I ' ve ever been to! The hotel is so charming that you don' t want to get out of it! It has a hot pot, it was terrific to see the snowy mountains while being in the hot water! The lady of the hotel was unbelievable! I also loved the marmelades of the breakfast! What a pity we stayed only for 1 night there! If I could rate it I would give a 6/5 rating!

We spent three nights at this guesthouse and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is family-run and the owners and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Of the three places we stayed in Iceland on this trip, this was our favourite. Both breakfast and dinner are served buffet-style; there is no choice at dinner, though there is a vegetarian option for those who require it. The food was excellent. You will need your own transport, but the location is out of this world. And there are not many places where you can watch from your room, at close quarters, birds such as godwits, golden plovers and short-eared owls. (The photo of the midnight sun demands some explanation - after all, Iceland is outside the Arctic Circle. The answer is that Iceland is situated some distance west of the time zone it has adopted (GMT), so "midnight" is not actually the middle of the night. Having said that, it does not go dark in midsummer, and sunset merges seamlessly into sunrise.) We thoroughly recommend this guesthouse.
