“Room with a view!”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

Great location for a first night in Iceland, only half hour drive north of Reykjavik. Outstanding site on north bank of fjord. Ask for a room with fjord view. Staff helpful and friendly, food - top notch. Great hot tubs!

Room Tip: Ask for fjord view when booking

I have been travel to Iceland on my 6th anniversary with my husband. We choose the Glymur hotel because of the picture and reviews from tripadvisor site and we weren't disappoint at all. The hotel stand to face of the big view to the lake and mountain. We stayed in one of the villa name " Black House " as the design of the house is base on black and it is very nice and so comfortable. We ordered room service at the first night and the food was so tasty and so delicious. The hot tubs outside is so amazing... ^_^ We really have a good time here at Glymur and we wish to come back and visit you again on our next trip to Iceland.

Room Tip: Must try to the villa... It is so amazing view from the house and it is so private :)

This was our first hotel outside of Reykjavik and we were not disappointed. We took the fjord route which was mainly clear on the trip out and the hotel was easy to find up on the hill overlooking the water. We booked one of the lodge rooms for 2 nights and we liked the freedom, privacy, peace and space this provided. The Lodges are large, well equipped, and ours had its own hot tub which was great to sit in (even in the snow) with a glass of wine - very romantic! The Hotel itself is comfortable and the staff are very friendly and helpful, with everything from weather and traffic updates to recommendations for trips out and walks. The restaurant has a great view looking out over the fjord (south) and serves good if unspectacular food which was really a bit of a shame given the quality of the ingredients. There is a northern lights alert service but I wouldn't just rely on this as the hotel faces the other way and the lights are unpredictable. We actually spotted them on leaving the main building after dinner and raised the alert on our first night. The other slight gripe (and this applies to a number of the hotels we stayed at) is that although they advertise a great location for spotting the Northern Lights there is a lot of light pollution from the main building and extraneous outside lights. We had to specifically request that these were turned off at the lodge as otherwise you end up with outside lights on all night. Health and Safety!!!
We didn't have fantastic sightseeing weather whilst we were there but nevertheless we visited the geo thermal springs at Deildartunguhver and the waterfalls at Hraunfossar which are well worth the drive - even in the snow! The Glymur is a great stop off for this part of Iceland and for those heading further North and we'd certainly go back if visiting again.

Room Tip: Overlooking the Fjord is the best view but remember that the northern Lights will be in the opposite...

Our 1st stop from airport, quite a long drive, took a couple of hours. Nice setting with views over Fjord. Short walk from room along wooden pathway to the hot tubs, lovely 40+ degrees as opposed to 0 degrees out of tub, hence run back to room with robe on after a long soak with a glass of wine (from duty free at airport as you come in). Food good, hubby said it was the best lamb he'd ever had! (but my curry was too salty) wine expensive, (hence duty free!) but all the hotels we stayed in were expensive for food and wine! The following day we were supposed to be driving over hills to Golden Circle but were concerned that roads would be bad after quite a heavy snowfall. The hotel manager looked up the road conditions (very useful website but can't remember what it was called, just google Iceland roads.) She said they were open. They were, but without our rental 4x4 with studded snow tyres we would have turned back! Nice hotel, helpful staff, good views and wonderful hot tubs! :)

Room Tip: They are split level and small but adequate.

Arrived via the longer Fjord route, which seemed a lot longer than the 15mins additional time than using the tunnel, however It was snowing and would not recommend this route if snow is settling on the road! Staff were very helpful giving advise on trips out and forecast for the Northern Lights with wake up service offered if they are spotted. Hot tub was a welcome relax after the drive and managed to co ordinate with 1 hour of sunshine! Rooms were lovely, split level with the bedroom upstairs and sitting area and bathroom downstairs. Torch may be useful if you need to 'go' in the night! The views over the Fjord magnificent from the room but even the rooms that had views over the mountain out the back were stunning. Bit of a shock when the hot water in the shower comes on as very strong smell of sulphur but you soon get used to that.
Food was beautiful, fish and lamb excellent and vegetarians also catered for. Breakfasts were superb with plenty of choice, the Gravlax was to die for with the dill sauce and all the bread was freshly made.
Would definitely stay here again and the staff welcoming and very helpful. After a very slight mix up over a dinner, and with no complaints from me, they even refunded the cost. Excellent service thank you Richard!

We stayed as a party of 3 in a two bedroom bungalow for two nights. Getting around Iceland is easy and the hotel was simple to find following the flags from the main road. The location provided decent stepping stone for exploring Snaefellsnes peninsular.

The staff were friendly and relaxed, though the hotel's dining area and menu feel formal, and dishes are expensive, even for Iceland! However, the food was well presented and very tasty. The bar was well stocked, but details on beer were light and I didn't press too hard for more information.

Our bungalow was comfortable and well equipped including a kitchen and private hot tub. The views from all of the bungalows were southerly to the sea Linley and hills to the west and east.

A call service was available for an alert to the presence of the Northern Lights. For viewing the aurora, darkness is desirable - it was not possible to control all of the lighting outside the bungalow and some lighting closer to the main building caused a minor distraction to the viewing.

I would readily stay here again, though I would continue to opt for the separate bungalow over the main building.

Room Tip: We stayed in the closest bungalow to the main building, refers to in English as 'Elegance'...

We stayed here for one night, in a two story room facing the mountain. The room was very spacious with a couch and chair on the main level, and the bed up on the upper level. We really missed having a fjord view, however. Our room was right over the main entrance and we could hear people when they came outside to smoke and talk. We were offered a wakeup call for the Northern Lights, but unfortunately the clouds never opened up on our night. The restaurant was very good. The bathroom was quite small and the hot water indeed had a strong sulphur odor, but the cold water was fine and the bathroom had a heated floor, a nice touch. I think with a fjord view I would increase the review to 4 stars.
