“Iceland in August”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2009

Our Iceland trip this past August was the most surprising vacation ever. We originally decided to go to Iceland because we happened to find pretty cheap airline tickets through Icelandic Air. We had never really considered Iceland before and really knew nothing about it. We didn't really know what to expect before we got there but we were pleasantly surprised with all that there was to do.

The landscape in Iceland is so extremely varied, it seemed every 20 minutes we drove, we had a completely different scenery. We rented a car and drove all around the country and stayed at different farms all throughout the country. We used a company called iceland farm holidays which were extremely helpful in finding farm stays throughout the country.

Check out the photos in this review and you can see for your self just how beautiful and breathtaking Iceland is! Definitely recommended!

“Great place to visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2009

Exceptional place to visit - I presume most Indians may not have much idea of what to expect. The glaciers, table top mountains, the geysers, geo thermal activity, blue lagoons, etc are all stunning to see. Vegetarian food is the only issue. Take time to visit North Iceland.

“Amazing place...definetly worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2009

Iceland is an amazing place...different from any others. The nature and scenary are so beautiful. It is very expensive but definetly worth a visit. We had a private tour guide(Jon from Husky Travel) who was brilliant. He showed us places we would not have seen if we went with a public tour.

“So different..so natural....so barren...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2009

Barren vistas, mountains, glaciers, ice lagoons, snow..hot mud pools, roaring waterfall, geysirs, few short trees, huge four wheel drives wizzing past your small rental car, Iceland is such a different beautful experience. The wind chill factor means you need an artic coat.
Even given with the wind, we had picnic lunches, as the views are amazing. Bought drinks etc at supermarkets.
It is affordable if you stay with hostelling international, buy food from super markets, alochol from Gov't shop, cook for yourself.
We travelled in early June 2008 for 16 days west around the Ring Road 1. The 24 hours a daylight means you can view the outdoors any time you like..so you can do outdoor things 24/7 if you can stay awake. So it is half the cost of elsewhere !. Sundays most towns are closed, supermarkets open for a few hours. HI hostels are excellent value, in Iceland, new, clean tidy, safe, and often in beautiful scenic locations. You will have to get used to removing your shoes inside hostels.
Do watch your car fuel supply....as petrol stations in the north of the country are remote & distant. You are best to buy petrol cards on your credit card..reduce transaction fees. Some petrol stations are shut or only accept the petrol card. Often the store/shop does not accept payment for petrol, on occassions it will be hard to lcoate a cash or sign for credit card petrol station.
Credit cards need a PIN number.
Rental cars: all known dents scrapes have a numbered rental car sticker ..so you will not get away with a new scratch. Be thorough to identify ALL scratches, dents. Before accepting car, even at Keflavik at midnight ( 1am daylight!.) We had golf ball shaped dents in the roof of a 4 wheel drive and luggage scratches at the rear door. Had to walk back & have them noted on the contratct. Slow down when high speed traffic approaches..especially the huge 4 wheel drive monsters on stone/gravel roads....we ocassionally pulled over.......they don't have a rental car excess nor pay for dents & probably know how to have a car fixed... Hate to break a windscreen ! It would take ages to have fixed. Cooperative Avis staff. You can use free hose & brush on a pole at all petrol station to wash the dirt off your car.

So:
beautiful amazing place,
slow down if speeding 4 wheel drive approach, don't play chicken..or you could be 'roadkill',
use the 24 hour daylight to view the sites, climb the mountains,
buy & use petrol cards, watch your petrol levels,
have a warm coat,
stay in HI hostels, buy food / alochol at supermarkets, grog shop when open,
watch the road not the incredible views,
sheep don't get off the road very fast,
Icelandic people love to speak English...and they are interested in you as a person,
no night or dark driving ....

enjoy a natural uncrowded place.

“Touring Iceland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2008

We have just arrived back from a week in Iceland (20 June 2008) and had a fantastic time. What a truly spectacular place!

We had a 4x4 and travelled from Hvergagerdi up to Lake Myvatn stopping at different hotels on route. The scenery is amazing and plenty of places to visit. The air is so clean and the water so pure I have never been to anywhere quite like it.

Food and drink is expensive especially if you eat in the hotels. You can drive for miles without seeing another sole and the roads or tracks are great fun to drive on. Don't expect to see lots of road signs and when you do they are literally just before the turning, so be prepared.

We went to The Blue Lagoon when we first arrived, which was a great way to start the holiday, and had we had time would have finished the holiday there also.

Went whale watching from Husavik with North Sailing and had a fantastic time, warm suits provided; which were needed. We were very lucky and spotted three blue whales, which was fantastic. If you enjoy the outdoors or just want to go do something different then I would recommend Iceland to anyone. The weather is changeable, but that is to be expected, we had brilliant sunshine, rain, cloud and even snow; but it all added to the holiday and didn't spoil our enjoyment.

In fact we are planning to go back later in the year.
