“Are we on earth or somewhere else?”
Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

After some fun offroad and "water" driving we arrived to this stunning place. The camping is fine, but the landscape and especially the Viti lake are awesome. Can't be missed in Iceland, also with the worst weather as happened to us.

“What a natural wonder!”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

This should definitely not be missed. You do have a few river crossings to get there, so a jeep and 4x4 is a must, but even the drive through the black and brown dessert is worth the trip, let alone Askja itself. We stayed at the camp nearby (very friendly) and went to see the volcano despite the bad weather (it was beginning of August and snowing). We parked at the most northern - nearby parking and it took as app. 20-30 minutes easy walk (not much uphill) to reach the craters. When you get there it is hard to believe that the giant lake is actually a huge volcano crater, and the small Viti crater nearby just makes everything even more surreal. Although the path to the Viti crater is a bit steep (quite easy if you go down the little stream) it is worth the while - yes it smells foul, but the water is quite warm (25 degrees C) and you can bathe in it.

“Go see it now!”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Amazing lake. We took bus tour from Myvatn up to Askja and Viti as we were afraid car we rented would not be able to cross the river fords on way. Amazing amazing place and nice walk into it. My boyfriend treked down into lake Viti and swam in the geothermal pool in the crater beside Askja and loved the experience. It was -1 and snowing when we where here in mid Aug! But do go if you find yourself in Iceland in summer season. Its well worth the journey.

“Exhausting but worth the walk”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

Our guide did not prepare us on how tiring the walk to Viti can be over snow. Coupled with the fact that the snow had not cleared as expected and the bus could not go as far as the normal car park, so we had an extra 1k to walk over snow, as well as the usual walk. I am not very fit but can manage 5-6 miles. However, this walk brought me close to total exhaustion. I am pleased I managed to do it though. Exceptional views if you have the weather.
