We had a Ford Fiesta and we used this car to visit the South of Iceland. This was our first stop, the gravel road was not difficult, and there was enough room to park. There is also a table in case you want to have a picnic. The waterfall itself is really beautiful, it is possible to get quite close to it. You will find the waterfall on route 32.

This waterfall requires some driving to visit but it is well worth it, just off route 32. Its carpark can be reached via a one lane gravel road with some undulations but can be driven by a car that is not a 4x4. GPS coordinates to the falls are N64° 06.877 W19° 51.233. When we visited, the surrounding hills were all covered in greenery and it looked beautiful. At the location there are no services of any kind not even restrooms just the gravel car park. I seem to recall that the waterfall was signposted from the main road and anyone that has difficulty walking down the slope leading to it should be able to see it clearly from the car park itself!

Hjálparfoss waterfall is a beautiful double waterfall in south Iceland near Mount Hekla on the Fossá River just north of where it meets the Þjórsá River. There's not a lot nearby, but the falls are just off Route 32 on the way to Landmannalaugar. We visited on the way to Landmannalaugar with Iceland Guided Tours. Although its not the highest falls, its flow is quite powerful and the setting in the valley is beautiful. There are also some impressive basalt cliffs around the falls basin. The tour guide told us that waterfall means "help" in Icelandic, because its the valley is the first sign of vegetation after crossing the highlands. Right next to the falls is Þjóðelvisbærinn Stöng, a reconstructed Viking long house. We didn't visit, but could see it from the road.
