Vaasa used to be a very beautiful city, but its main square has been spoiled by an architectural horror of enormous proportions, the Rewell Center. It fills one side of the square and is a good contender in the ugliest modernist buildings class in Finland. The hotel is just a small part of the house and accessible from a very small entrance, in addition to the passage from the shop area. Reception is also rather shabby and small. I spent the a Friday night, and had asked for a quiet room. This is essential because there is a night club on top of the building and the downstairs is also rather noisy. After midnight the room WAS pretty quiet, but strangely it had an ugly pillar in the middle of the small room. Obviously the rooms have been constructed after the fact, because the pillar is not very practical. One can get hurt in the middle of the night in the dark if you forget where the pillar is! The breakfast was very good and it opens early so that one can make it to the fast train to Helsinki which leaves at 7 am sharp. But I definitely cannot recommend the hotel for a tourist who wants to see the nice side of Vaasa!
