Original Sokos Hotel Hamburger Bors
Ranked #6 of 16 Hotels in Turku
Reviewed March 23, 2013

It was late December and the deepest winter in Finland, temp. 15 celsius below zero. My single room was cold propably reason many windowns and too less heaters. Sauna on was really nice as far some too growded, swimming pool also on the top floor. Breakfast good enough just as the same as so many other Sokos- hotels all around in Finland.

Very big hotel with beautiful swimming pool in loft, nice view on the city from my room, but small bathroom. Very friendly reception. Breakfast in big hall (floor has uncomfortable slope) without any assistance or laid table... food was well presented though.

The photos I had seen online of Hamburger Bors do not do it justice as I believe it is marketed as a 3 star hotel yet it's as good as many 4 and 5 star hotels where I've stayed.

I stayed in a family room on the 6th floor with my young daughter. Our room was huge – I could have swung a few cats in there! – and the free bottles of water were very welcome, as was the free wifi. The cleanliness was also appreciated as I'd not found the same level at another hotel in Turku.

The buffet breakfast was fresh and extensive and the Children's Play Room gave my daughter time and space to play each day.

We didn't have dinner at the hotel but we would have been spoilt for choice as there are seven restaurants, many popular with locals too.

A lot more Finnish people smoke than I see these days in London but thankfully the hotel is mostly non-smoking and is all non-smoking in the public areas including the restaurants. The hotel has a few single rooms with balconies which are appreciated by the smokers and these rooms are still larger than you would expect.

The building dates back to the 1830s and has been a hotel since 1904. It's a large hotel – 346 rooms – and a couple of the suites even have private saunas. For the rest of us there's a swimming pool and saunas on the 7th floor for all guests to use.

There are other partner hotels nearby (Sokos Hotel City Bors and Sokos Hotel Seurahuone) and guests staying there share some of the facilities at Hamburger Bors such as breakfast and Reception. All staff speak English and Reception staff offered excellent polite and efficient service.

Turku is a popular shopping destination and the shops stay open late. The hotel location is as central as can be as it is on the market square.

We stayed here while visiting Moominworld and the hotel had an offer on park tickets. The bus stop to Moominworld was right on the market square, as is the bus to and from the airport making this hotel extremely convenient for international travellers. I'd definitely stay here again and will hopefully stay in other Sokos hotels on future trips to Finland as they are the largest hotel group in the country.

Stayed here for business while in Turku. The hotel manages to charge very high rates for a very average hotel.

Pros:
+ Location

Cons:
- the "superiour" room was a disappointment, the bathroom felt like it came from a cruise ship
- the pool / sauna was grim
- Strange parking system
- the bar closes very early
- the breakfast room is old and the floor is a bit tilted(?)

I would not stay here again, unless the hotel is seriously remodelled.

We had hopes but had to conclude that time has run past the Hamburger bors. It used to be an establishment in the city of Turku. I suppose the current owners aren't too willing to invest in the hotel branch of their business and that is what you get. Worn out rooms, sub par breakfast service and empty hotel restaurants. Our room was faced against the market square. The windows are not very well isolated as you can clearly hear the busy bus traffic on the outside. The room was very hot. We turned down the heat element but to no avil. The AC didn't function. Thank god we found a window we could open which effectively cooled the room down. The bed was ok for one person to sleep in. With two persons in it, however, the king size bed felt like sleeping on jello. One person turns sides and the whole bed flutters.

The breakfast buffe was mediocre at best. I ate there one year ago and nothing had changed. Slimey cold cuts, hard bred and no speciality coffees. The personnel wasn't very service minded.

Not worth 90eur per night. There's more than a few options close by.

I stayed in that hotel for five days. It was nice inside, outside it doesn't look so modern and nice in my opinion. The room I had was really clean, nice, good for one person for short stay. For longer stay it would be too small, I am afraid. The fact that wasn't that convinient was that I was located in the building on the other side of the street and actually all main facilities were in the other place. It was really hard for me to find the door to that other building as there are some stores on the bottom floor and the door with which you enter the hotel is actually not that obviously seen.

I stayed here one night during August. The rooms were quite nice and fully equipped. Be sure to ask room away the market square because there's a quite busy street with buses and cars driving by. Sauna and pool department was pretty old and the sauna itself was very small. Breakfast was good with cereals, cold cuts, fruits, rolls and warm dishes. The staff was helpful and nice so nothing to complain there. Also a free WiFi was nice surprise. OK hotel with a good location if you're searching hotel from the downtown of Turku

Room Tip: Ask room facing away from market square because it can get quite noisy at nights
