This is a cathedral which is a work of love. It's beautiful and the detail is incredible. There is a feel of the Nordic in it. It's best appricated when u can spend a few munutes sitting down to admire the details. Do get a view from the gallery up the stairs.

I used to live in Tampere for many years, so I guess a word for this highlight of the old hometown is in order. I have visited dozens and dozens of churches both in Finland (I was a church enthusiast as a kid) and in Italy, and this will forever rank among the most moving ones.

I visited this place many times as a child, but when I moved to Tampere as an adult, I would still return there once in a while to contemplate – and I am not a follower: this place transcends such boundaries. The reason will be evident.

The church is an imposing figure and there are interesting features of the architecture, but what really makes this place is the artwork of Hugo Simberg. I haven't seen anything of the kind anywhere else. You have the frescoes of the wounded angel tended by peasant boys, the frieze of the young boys bearing a gigantic garland among images of afterlife and death, the Garden of Death with friendly skeleton men tending the flowers of souls... The last one was my absolute favourite as a child.

But as an adult what really impressed me was the image on the apex: the Serpent with a huge apple lodged in his mouth, staring down in on the gathered congregation. I am still perplexed by the fact that Simberg was allowed to go on and decorate the church in this fashion that forces the viewer not just to passively take in religious messages but to ponder his or her reception and the conflict with the (at least seemingly) non-Christian features of the imagery.

This architecturally interesting stone church is perhaps most famous for the frescos within, like the Garden of Death tended by friendly looking skeletons -- and most famously the huge serpent on the ceiling with the apple of temptation; some feel it's bad enough to have it, and that it shouldn't occupy the highest point of the cathedral, and still campaign a century later for its removal. Google these, and also the Wounded Angel. A culturally significant place, one of battle during the Finnish civil war. I'm certainly no church-goer, but I think you should research this place so that you know what you are looking at when you go to see it, because it's worth it; unique artistry and historical significance.

Beautiful window paintings, harmonic atmosphere. Worth a visit when you go to Tampere.
Check this website: http://www.virtualtampere.com/?t=518&p=520&h=322.51&v=10&f=76 and you can see it yourself. Small garden around the church. Also wonderful wall paintings to admire on the walls and on the ceiling.
