Kept thinking I'd be finished, but kept finding more interesting things. A really great exhibit on the Finnish civil war in 1918, and what happened in Tampere. Very well put together, although would have appreciated a bit more English translation available. History of Tampere section was also well done, and I spent more time there than expected. Then a section downstairs on the area in the 11th century and before, with lots of interesting artefacts and exhibits. This was a very well done museum, much better than the average.

The best concept in museums that I have seen for quite some time. This museum contains a multitude of small museums. Our boys spent most of their time in the Games Museum. Lots of interactive video games from past to present, DOS, PC, Wii, Atari, Nintendo Classic, coin operated to name a few. Exhibits are set up to showcase the systems in their natural habitat (bedroom, nerd room, arcade). This museum had all exhibits in Finnish and English which was excellent. Second Museum, the one I enjoyed the most was the Tammerkoski museum showcasing the industrial history of the rapids area. Most of the exhibits were translated. Very informative and well presented. The 1918 exhibit was the one I looked forward to but was dissappointed that the detailed explanations were only in Finnish. A few main panels were in English which gave a general idea. We rushed through the minerals and natural history as they were only in Finnish. Overall we spent about 2.5 hours and felt it was time and money well spent. Very fitting that the historical building is used to house such a well done museum.

The Vapriikki museum complex houses a number of museums/exhibitions and a restaurant/cafe under the same roof.

The museums cater to a range of interests, ranging from the history of Tampere and its industrial past to the Gaming Museum. The Gaming Museum will particularly be of interest to anyone with a childhood in the 1980s and 1990s as they have a massive range of games to actually play all the way from the Commodore 64 era to modern consoles. There is also a game hall with arcade machines which are also available for free. How cool is that!

The restaurant serves a standard Finnish workplace canteen lunch for 10 euros - nothing to rave about but convenient and more than enough to keep you going the whole day.

Highly recommend visiting, particularly on a rainy day! Do expect to spend a good 3-4 hours at minimum if you want to most of the exhibitions. More if you like your games like I do!

We visit Vapriikki once a year and this time went to China and Viking exhibitions. Both were interesting, Viking exhibiton maybe more experiential with all the stories, which you can listen in different parts of the exhibition.
If you visit Vapriikki, don´t forget to see the best nature photographies of the year upstairs.

Muvia vaihtelevia näyttelyitä, tällä kertaa Kiinasta! Myös museon ympäristössä on paljon nähtävää. Lyhyt kävelymatka keskustasta. Käyn aina Tampereella käydessäni.
Museum in an old factory building. Beautiful surroundings, lots to see inside and outside. A short walk from the city centre.
