“Nice hotel near the railway station”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

A recently renovated hotel built in a former grain storehouse. My single room on the top floor had a unique diagonal roof and tiny windows - so practically no view, plain scandinavian style decoration with wood and mostly light colours. The bathroom was small with dark tiles and a miniature sized washbasin, which was rather impractical.
The breakfast buffet was quite versatile for a 3 star hotel, but the space and furniture were in need of refurbishment.
The hotel has been granted the Nordic Ecolabel and the rooms have been renovated in cooperation with the Allergy and Asthma Federation.

Early October I stayed for one night in this hotel with my husband. We chose this hotel because of the prize: it was a little bit more than 100e for staying from Friday to Saturday. The service was good (we actually didn't have to ask for anything special), and so was the breakfast. During the nighttime the hotel was quiet enough for us to get a good night sleep.

Good location close to railway station in an old factory. Rooms and hotel are bit different and nice due to the building not originally been build as a hotel. We managed to get a big room with sauna on the 5th floor (due checking in late when hotel was full) which was nice. No idea of the normal rooms...

Breakfast was normal Finnish hotel breakfast with no exciting extras.

Nice staff, pretty rooms and delicious breakfast. They have a big luggage room if you want to have a last walk in Tampere before leaving. It is really close to the train station so you can get there easily and also very close to a nearby church you can see from really far away. The church is also worth the visit to take a few pictures.

LOCATION. The hotel is located in the "dark side" of Tampere, not in the central part of the city. I arrived late on Sunday, the area around the hotel looked deserted, cafes were closed, enough garbage in the streets. At the same time when I went for a walk and crossed the railway, the central part of Tampere looked quite lively and inhabited. So if you come for leisure, it's better to choose a hotel closer to the center.
Sokos Hotel Villa is located close to the railway station and just 3 minutes walk from the Tampere Hall so if you come for business, the location is very good.
Also the building was rather difficult to find, it doesn't have an impressive facade like a usual hotel, it's hidden behind surrounding buildings and look quite poorly from outside.

ROOMS. Rooms are very new, accurate, designed in a countryside manner and are really very comfortable.

STAFF. The receptionist was the only person I had a chance to talk to and I should say she was a very nice and friendly girl.

BREAKFAST. Very good. Good selection of food including local specialities like blood sausages. Good start of the day.

GENERAL IMPRESSION. I did really like the hotel. Excellent service, excellent breakfast, excellent sleep. Once again, the location and thye exterior are a bit doubtful.

I stayed at Sokos Villa because I was attending a conference at the Tampere University. The hotel was clean and nice enough. I personally found the interior design of my room a bit cold- everything was in grey tones and the red brick wall inside combined with white furniture doesn't really make a place cosy. The bathroom was quite big and mirrors there excellent. I was happy about some of the room amenities such as a good hair-dryer and an iron, these can be useful if you are traveling because of work.
The staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was plenty and delicious!
I would recommend this hotel for a work-related stay- it is close to the railway centre and the university. For a holiday I'd probably pick a cosier place.

Room Tip: If you have a choice then ask for a room facing the railway side. My room was on the other side and...

Sokos Hotel Villa is renovated to an old factory/industrial building in the city center of Tampere. Due to the history it was refreshing to visit a hotel building that has character, especially when the old structures have been left visible in hallways and rooms.

Check-in to this hotel has been combined with a bar which meant that the only person working in reception was booked in serving drinks when we arrived. In our turn we requested for a quiet room and got assigned to 5th floor apparently to backside of the building as we saw some kind of construction site or storage from our small window. This did not bother us at all, but in case many rooms are alike it might be good not to expect too fancy views. The room itself was very nice, small but very comfortable and organized smartly. All the equipment and furniture in the room was in excellent condition and very clean - except for the airconditioning vent in the bathroom which seems to be the thing cleaners always overlook. We liked the minimalistic white design in the room. The only weak design in the room was the blackout curtain which leaked everywhere, top, bottom and sides therefore having very little effect. We solved this issue by blocking the window with pillows and towels but sure this is an extra thing for traveller to start planning due to malfunctioning curtains. Beds were very comfortable.

Breakfast in this hotel is served in the adjacent restaurant. Both warm and cold buffet are available as well as breads and drinks. Food quality was good and restaurant was very clean.

We paid the room using frequent flyer points and for that I can say that the value was good. At the same time I agree with other reviewers that the standard rates in this hotel are a bit expensive.
