My husband and I stayed in the City Hovi for two nights, 7 and 8 June 2014, while visiting friends. I chose the hotel because it was reasonably priced (for Finland) and received decent reviews on this site and another. I knew I wasn't getting the Ritz, but that was okay.
The place is immaculately clean. While the hotel's decor has been refreshed, the bathrooms are dated (and miniscule). But, even at their age, there is no evidence of grot in the shower or around the toilet and sink.
The rooms are tiny; our two large suitcases filled the available floorspace. One ended up going back into the rental car.
The staff was quite nice. Upon check-in my request for a dark room had been noted and we were taken to one that she thought would suit. When we noted that there were no room-darkening shades, she immediately offered a different room, noting that its view was over the parking lot so was not as nice. Given that the first room looked over a city street, we didn't feel there was anything lacking in the trade off. (Why only some rooms have shades is anyone's guess....)
The breakfast was adequate. Baked goods were store-bought, but there was fresh porridge in a slow cooker that was quite good
Unfortunately, the person who was assigned to straightening our room stopped half way thru the job. When we returned from a day with our friends, we found one bed made but the other not. Towels had been collected, but nothing replaced them. When I advised the gentleman on duty of the situation, he seemed genuinely peeved on my behalf.
If I were to return to Rauma, I think I'd look into another option, but if nothing panned out I'd not have a problem staying there again.
