“Wow. Not what you'd expect in Jyväskylä!”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

Jyväskylä certainly doesn't position itself as the culinary centre of Finland. Yet the dinner in Pöllöwaari was better than the most fine dining experiences in Helsinki. In fact, it was probably one of the best ever. We didn't even need to look at the menus, as the the recommendations sounded so tempting. I had scallops and pike-perch - both were beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The Austrian white wine matched the food perfectly. Also the dessert, passion fruit souffle, was tasty. The atmosphere was relaxed, with attentive service. What else can I say - five stars!

“Redefining quality cooking !”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

We stayed at the Yopuu hotel for 2 nights, so it was inevitable to give a try to its famous restaurant, Pöllöwaari, having read so many excellent reviews about it.
All we had heard proved to be true. The place is not of any particular style, but it has a very calm atmosphere with low volume soft music. For starter we had the creamy vegetable soup made of season´s green vegetables, Bayonne ham crumble and pistachio nuts. It is not very exaggerated to say that this was probably one of the best (if not the best) soups I have ever tasted. Creamy as it should be, with fine vegetable and herbs aromas, with a unique light green colour and with the taste of the pistachio nuts to match perfectly with the ham crumbs and the vegetables. Perfect.
For main I chose fillet of veal with grilled overcooked veal´s cheek, sweet potato purée and barbeque sauce. The dish was perfectly presented with the veal (in 2 separate super-tender pieces) and the veal cheek (in a central pice) lying on a bed of 2 distinct and perfectly coloured sauces (sweet potato purée and barbeque sauce). The taste was even better. A perfectly prepared, presented and with divine taste dish. My wife prefered the glow fried arctic char with season´s vegetables, forest mushrooms creamed with shallot onions which was delicious as well (according to her opinion).
The service was exceptional: polite, efficient and very helpful.
It is true that sometimes you need to eat just for the pleasure of fine taste and not just to ease your hunger. This was one of these cases. A truly wonderful gastronomic experience.

“One of the best meals we've ever had in Finland”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Durting a trip with some of my Parisian friends in Jyväskylä, we had one the most enjoyable dining experiences ever in Finland. The traditional decor of the restaurant is classic and elegant, and the welcoming staff were among the friendliest we've ever met. At the same time, they were exceptionally knowledgeable about both the menus and the wine list. On the recommendation of our waitress, we chose the Jyväskylä menu that turned out to offer the very best of Finnish cuisine, prepared with such incredible creativity and finesse that we've hardly ever experienced elsewhere. For the € 50, it was absolutely worth it.
From the wine list, we picked up and exceptional organic Paternoster wine from Southern Italy, that surprised us all by its aromas and full body. Again, we were pleasantly surprised by the expertise of our waitress regarding the wines.
In the morning, the breakfast buffet continued along the same lines, large choice of quality products.
Bravo to the whole team of this restaurant!

“Perfect local food”
Reviewed June 7, 2012

Very good food - just a bit expencive. Pollowaari serves excellent local ingredients. The place is situated in the centre of the town so it can easily be reached on foot.

“Still almost perfect”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

Pöllöwaari is probably the best dining experience outside Helsinki. It is all the more so as Matala in Oulu has stopped.

The restaurant has been redecorated since my last visit. It is now a very sober modern decoration. Very pleasant and peaceful.

Menu is still great. During the 9 course meal, there have been only two minor mistakes (a not so necessary mayonnaise and a pointless sorbet). Especially the veal carpaccio was a success. Cooking is very fine, well balanced and very well executed. Nothing too original but all in all a real fine dining experience.

The best part is probably the winelist. Great wine at great price ! If you want to enjoy an exceptional beverage, it is a place to go. One example: Pommard Rugiens 1995 by De Montille... a rare and wonderful wine! At last a sommelier who understands that you need to serve ready to drink wine in a restaurant and not the last vintage.

Service is good, wine service is perfect. They do know what they serve, though it can feel a bit "learned by heart". It is good to hear a sommelier not telling nonesense about the wine he offers.

A very recommendable address, hopefully still for a long time!
