The stay was overall comfortable. The reception was very good and helpful.

The room was good but the curtains were not sufficient to block the sun light - considering the duration of sun light (almost 18 hours a day), it was a bit irritating in the night!

The breakfast was the only real low point - exactly same food for 2 weeks is not very appetizing. I stopped taking breakfast after a week - there was not even a single different dish!

The location was great - just a walk down to the main shopping district.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights. This is good quality, centrally located hotel. Rooms were a bit old fashioned, but the beds were ok and the ac was good, even it was +26C outside. There was a good gym and well-sized pool that my daughter tested for several times. We had dinner twice at the hotel. The food met its purpose and was very reasonably priced with vouchers and -20% discount during the weekend.

This is a good hotel. Little to fault it, but also little to get excited about! The location is central.

The public areas are a little cluttered & crowded, the rooms are in the small side but it is all clean. The breakfasts & bar meals are good, with a good range of choices.

When there are Conferences/meetings it can feel too small, even breakfast is relocated to the restaurant/bar area.

The biggest negative is the wifi, although free it is very slow & unreliable throughout the hotel.
I would stay here again but might try somewhere else next time.

Maybe my reviews are a little slanted since my last hotel stay which was in the middle of nowhere Brazil. Your eyes are opened and you come to realize that so many other places in the world and their hotels are really pretty great in comparison! lol

But in seriousness, Scandic isn't a bad hotel. Not perfect, but good enough. As mentioned in other reviews, the decor is a bit dated, and the outside looks like a bathhouse, but overall the rooms are adequate and feel clean. You can't beat that.

I did have some trouble with temperature control. It gets a little cold in the rooms at night even in May (and the outside temperature was great, 20 degrees C or so and daylight from 4 AM to 11 PM!) but they disable the radiator heat after April in favor of forced air A/C.

I hate the blanket they provide for bedding. It is exactly like the other blankets I've had in northern Germany and Denmark. The material doesn't breathe at all and is thick so you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. I have grown accustomed to just sleeping with A/C off and a decent thermal sweater/sweatshirt, which more or less provides enough warmth. I must be missing something but I don't get why the Northerners love these non-breatheable blankets! Anyway, I digress. Aside from that, the hotel is good enough and the restaurant is good too. Worth eating at if you find yourself not wanting to venture.

Amenities: You can rent a bicycle for free and take a ride around the 15 km lake on the bike path. I highly recommend it and if you come during the summer months, there is enough daylight to spare for anybody

I liked the fact that you can see the hotel from the station (where we arrived) and, once in the hotel, you are only a block away from the city center. The hotel was a little on the old fashioned side in terms of decor. We booked in advance for a special deal and ended up in one of the suites. The room was well positioned on the corner, with windows in two different directions. There was a nice sized sauna and that was a great thing to have. The hotel staff were very friendly and were good at letting us leave our case behind while we checked out and went off to Helsinki for the week-end. We liked the fact that the hotel has a good restaurant with a good menu. It attracts people from the town as well as hotel guests. It helped a lot that as `1st floor' (and then 2nd floor) members we were given Euro 6 (first floor) and Euro 12 (second floor) vouchers to spend in the hotel. That helped reduce the cost of the meals in the restaurant. Nonetheless, in a 10 day period we only used the restaurant three times -- mostly for variety than any other reason. Our absolute favorite restaurant was just across the road in the station and is called the Shalamar (Indian restaurant).
There were a couple of problem areas however. On arrival the first time our room was not cleaned, even though this was around 6:00 pm and the cleaning staff had gone home and it was the week-end. Patiently the woman on the desk worked through the options, made a phone call to a colleague (on a Sunday night) and sorted things out. We still ended up with a suite (but we suspect that someone who was going to be upgraded ended up in the room they paid for when they arrived!!). So full marks to the desk clerk for her initiative. The other problem was that (in our second week -- on the 5th floor) it took forever to get our room cleaned. The final problem was that if you were not at breakfast at the earliest time they ran out of stuff (and didn't seem to replace things) that was not replaced or very slowly replaced. That was my biggest complaint.

We have recently spent 10 days in this hotel, on two separate stays, in two different rooms. This review is based on both stays.

The strengths of this hotel are the front desk and restaurant staff--when we arrived, even though we had reserved a superior family room, one of only four apparently, the room was not cleaned and because it was a Sunday and no cleaners were on duty, it was not available. Fortunately the young woman at the front desk had initiative and after about 20 min., several phone calls and some juggling, she was able to install us in a similar room. Similarly, the restaurant staff were always cheerful. The location--near the train station and the core downtown areas-- is also good. You can literally see the train station from the hotel. The benefits of the frequent guest programme are quite generous (and clever), as they compel you to eat in the hotel restaurant, which is not a bad choice at all! Breakfast was good---great scrambled eggs and lovely French bread rolls. Beds were comfortable and the room was quite. The private sauna, which comes with this category of room was also a great bonus.

The weaknesses are the uneven housekeeping service---fine on the 4th floor, not so good on the 5th floor (no replacement of coffee, towels for sauna on some days, drains with hair in the shower, dirty hairdryer, pink scum under the ridge of the toilet). Maybe I am just super fussy but these later points were off putting and I would like to think that they were an isolated incident. I waited to see if the drain would be cleaned but could stand it no longer and did it myself. The second weakness is the outdated dark and dreary furnishings in the rooms. This is sad because Finnish design is normally bright and cheerful, yet the Scandic chose to decorate the rooms with dark green fabrics and dark wood. I am still not sure who thought up the salmon pink bathrooms! Maybe it was popular in the 90s? Can't remember it though :-). From the outside, the building promises so much more, with its airy atrium, yet it feels dreary inside. Thirdly, if you didn't get to breakfast early, you ran the risk of finding the eggs, bacon, bread, etc. were gone and not replaced (only once did I see this happen with the eggs).

Would I stay here again? Because of Scandic's loyalty programme, likely. However, I am also tempted to give the 'new' SOKOS hotel a try. It will depend on the rates that are on offer at the time.

Room Tip: If you are travelling as a couple or family, and their is a good online price, splurge for the large...

I was having a business trip and staying over one night in this hotel. This was my third time in this same hotel, and it is always a good experience. Service is very good, stuff is helpful and nice. Hotel rooms were clean and comfortable, especially the bed. Scandic -hotels offers a steady good quality, as always. Can warmly recommend.

Room Tip: I had a standard room with a king size bed and bath. Room was quiet and nice and I slept very well.
