“Reasonable hotel for short stays in Kotka”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Our room was facing one of the main streets, but Kotka is not very busy.
Room was ok, beds were comfortable, bathroom spacious enough with a good shower and enough space for yr stuff. Minibar prices ridiculous, visit the Alko in town to enjoy a good wine instead.
Breakfast was included and nice, better organized compared to Helsinki Presidentti.
Staff ok, also in Fransmanni Restaurant and Amarillo next door where we had a nice minute steak.
Parking is maybe a bit expensive but convenient.
There is not that much to see in Kotka, but visit the Maritime museum, the park and the church. It's an ok place for a day's rest.
Wifi only on ground floor.

Room Tip: The higher the better

This is the first Sokos hotel where I stayed. My first impression is that this chain is a little like Ibis in France. Standard prefab bathrooms could do with a refresher. Free internet (cable) in the room. Breakfast menu was good (plenty of choice, some local specialties). Staff as receptions was friendly and efficient.

I stayed in this hotel for 11 nights for work, the room was really nice and a good space and the breakfasts in the morning were really good, the bread was truly delicious.

But the rooms did not have wifi in the them, it was only available in the reception, bar or restaurant - there was a cable in my room for the laptop but that isn't much use for the phone.

And the main disappointment about the stay was the cleaning of the rooms, I had a twin bed and was clearly sleeping in the one by the window (I had stuff on the other one) and not once did they change my sheets during that time. I once left a towel on the toilet lid accidentally and they didn't even pick it up and replace it or hang it up.

I went to the gym most days and the bin in there never got emptied, I noticed cause a can of drink was in it and it never moved.

Think this is the only hotel in the city centre so not a lot of options, my room wasn't near the nightclub so that was lucky and I did sleep well and the beds were comfy but I am glad when I go back I now have an apartment so I don't need to stay there any more.

Room Tip: I was on level 5 and my room faced Kaivokatu and I didn't hear any noise from the nightclub.

Moderate, clean hotel. Service matter-of-fact but not especially hospitable. Quite modern room (a superior room), but both beds in need of new matresses - now we felt like sleeping in hammocks.
Would have given an avarage rating, if the breakfast at the downstairs restaurant Fransmanni had not turned out to be a total nightmare. No free seats, but half of the tables waiting for the staff to clean them up of loads of dirty dishes and food rests left by the previous customers. No staff member to assist the incoming customers, but leaving them to compete and fight among themselves for the seats becoming available, and even to clear up tables for themselves. The chaos continuing around the buffet tables. Half of the service trays empty, people queueing and waitinig impatiently for the waiters to bring in new ones. After having been waiting for the cheece, and then for the Karelian pies, and then for the boiled eggs, went to fetch a cup of coffee just to find the coffee cistern empty. When the new coffee finally arrived, both the coffee cream and the milk cans next to it turned out to be empty as well. Really noisy, messy, barbarian and disturbing breakfast experience.

This is your basic Sokos hotel; clean, friendly, average breakfast. There's one extra you don't often see in Finland: the rooms are actually air conditioned.

Room Tip: You can hear the nightclub faintly in the yard side rooms.

The hotel is centrally placed. About 10 min walk from the main sea activity museum Vellamo as well as 10 min walk away from Maretarium, an aquarium of Finnish sea life. Rooms are clean and newly renovated. Breakfast is good Finnish average without any surprises and/or specialties .

Good be recomended
