High class restaurant, excellent food and service. Most special is that I had a feeling of being very close to the outside environment while eating inside because of the glass walls and ceiling. You have an enormous view of the sky and outside while eating inside.

We ate in both the restaurant and in the self service café. The tables in the café are well spaced and can be difficult to get, particularly in summer, so booking a table is vital. The restaurant is more crowded as it seems to attract large groups making space between tables limited. It is an interesting building starting life as an Orangery apparently, mostly constructed of iron and glass, making it light and airy. Despite the crowd in the restaurant, our booked table was available on arrival, the service was good and cheerful and the food was delicious. The self service café, which we used a lunch time, provided a good range of dishes, which were plenty for us as we were going out to good restaurants at night. Because of the numbers it is very lively, particularly as there is an outdoor stage directly outside.

This restaurant has been in business for almost 150 years. It is probably worth going just to sit in the beautiful old building which is a large orangery situated in Etelaesplanadi park. There are three parts, self-service cafe, a bar and a restaurant. I first went a year or two but on this trip my wife was able to come with me and this was the place I wanted to take her first. It id not disappoint. The waiting staff were efficient and friendly. The food was excellent. We both had steaks and they were just right. The Kappeli cake was a very pleasant surprise, I probably would not have ordered it but it was part of the set menu I had chosen. It was a light moist sponge filled with a raspberry mouse. Food is Helsinki is very expensive compared to elsewhere in Europe, the prices at Kappeli were in line with other restaurants in the city. However, you can save money by choosing one of the set price menus, especially if, like us, you share the starter and dessert.

There was an interesting mixture of tourists and locals in this beautiful mid 1800's building. divided into several large rooms with nicely spaced tables the ambience is busy but quiet. Excellent food (the reindeer whilst expensive was very tender and very good) and wine selection. Very convenient right in the Esplanade of downtown Helsinki, its worth a visit if in the city.

In the Helsinki's Explanade park there is a historic Deco pavillon, all glass/iron; in the evening the inside is enlightened by a plenty of cristal ceiling pendants to recreate a "fin de siècle" athmosphere.
It's very funny to eat there, you feel to be a "Bella Otero" or an actress in a Lubitsch film!!!
The food is Finnish traditional but contamined by global cooking, because this place is vowed to a touristic aim. I ate a single dish, a "encrosted langustines with mushrooms and shrimps; a very big dish with a more than decent taste.
I recommend this place over all to romantic or keen on history travelers!
