Strolling along the Espanade from Market Square we checked out menus and prices at restaurants along the way. This was our first evening in Helsinki and all seemed expensive. At the end of the Espanade ( the Stockman end ) we came upon a wine and salad bar called "Wine & Deli". Wandering in we found the salad bar where fresh salads were made to order by cheerful and helpful staff. Salads included two generous toppings of your choice and more could be added from a wide range of options. Delicious breads were also available. We paid € 25 for two salads which included prawns, extra toppings and breads. There are several seating arrangements from bar style ( standing or high stools ), outdoor terrace to comfortable sofas. We settled into a sofa and enjoyed a fresh, tasty and healthy meal. We thought that Helsinki was not as expensive as people said....until I asked for a glass of merlot at the bar...€15 please! In fairness it was a large glass. Sitting on a sofa balancing a tray with a bowl of salad and a glass of wine on your knees requires some skill...and yes, there was a mishap!! Best use the tables when eating.
Home now, we agreed that our meal at the "Wine & Deli" was the best value and most memorable ( due to the mishap! ) we had in Helsinki during our five day stay. We now regret not having returned.
"Wine & Deli" is part of the more expensive Ravintola Teatteri.
