We visited here during a Midsummer getaway to Helsinki and wanted a nice meal out for my girlfriends birthday, this was not the original restaurant that we had booked but as that plan fell through we had to look for an alternative and found this one and what a joy it was that we did!

We are strong believers in that when we go away we like to try to be as traditional to the local culture as possible so after reading on one of the brochures that this was a traditional Finnish restaurant we were very eager to give it a go,everything about our visit from start to finish was superb.

Upon arrival as we did not have a reservation it was a little busy so we sat out in the garden and had a nice quiet drink before the waitress came and brought us to our table,it was located downstairs and when you go down it's like you are walking back into time,it's just great, you walk through a long wooden hall that resembles a lumberjack lodge with little alcoves on each side that have tables for 2 tucked away in them with miners lanterns on the walls and little candles on the table creating a romantic atmosphere and pleasant setting.

The tables are wooden and made from logs as is all of the pots/breadboards etc which kept things very traditional,it was also nice that all the waitresses dressed in peasant clothing which really added to the feel of things.

The staff were very friendly, efficient and always on hand to help, the food was absolutely delicious and the menu selection was vast and very appetizing.

We had a mixed local delicacy platter to start with which included things such as beetroot smoked salmon, reindeer tongue and more and it was delicious.

Our mains included vendace (small fish) with mash and vegetables and reindeer with turnip and berries and it was one of the best meals we had ever had.

The wine and beer was also very good.

All in all we found the prices to be reasonable when you consider that it is Scandinavia and its renown for being higher than other desinations so this was fine.

If your looking for a traditional restaurant that offers fantastic food with good service and a great atmosphere in a central location then look no further than here, I promise you won't be disapointed.

Tried things not had before, such as cured reindeer tongue and other 'game'. Generally, the food was good, although it is fairly expensive.
The highlight was the waitress - she was very funny and made the evening a really enjoyable experience.
I would go back if in Helsinki.

I think when someone tells you you're having dinner at a 'themed' restaurant it could go two ways, be corny and cheap, or deliver a really accurate description of the genuine Finnish experience.

Thankfully Savotta delivered the latter.]

The food was exceptional, served in a traditional way, combining a starter of local cheese and reindeer meat with good bread and salad and followed by a main of slow cooked lamb in a delicious gravy with vegetables.

The ambience was lovely, all wood and plenty of tasteful old trinkets. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and gave fine details of the menu and wines that went with it.

If you're in Helsinki on business or pleasure this will certainly warm the heart and fill the stomach with fine food!

Enjoyed a dinner with a large party of eight at Savotta. We chose this Finnish restaurant for our last group meal in the country, as it seemed "authentic" in terms of furnishings and entrees. Indeed, the restaurant interior was woodsy and kitschy, suitable for tourists. The entrees were also seemingly traditional. The Carelian Casserole (sp?) I ordered with mashed potatoes was delicious--VERY good food. The meal came with a large basket of bread--also very delicious. The low point of the meal was the draft beer. Both selections I ordered at the high price of 7-8 euros each, were horrible, especially the traditional Finnish beer which was flat and had floating bits of yeast in it. Perhaps this is "authentic" or "traditional," but regardless, it was one of the nastiest things I've put in my mouth in a long time, and they refused to replace it with another option. Otherwise, our service was good, with a host dressed in traditional garb, who kept up with our large party and gave no grief for splitting checks. We arrived at the restaurant fairly early in the evening, around 6:30. By the time we left the restaurant, the basement area in which the seating is situated (looks like an arched wine cellar) was getting uncomfortably hot. We were all glad to pay and get out for some fresh air, and I'm sure the dining area only got hotter as the evening pressed on. Overall, not a bad experience due to the setting and food. Not a cheap restaurant by any stretch, but fun for a group of foreigners saying farewell to Finland. I suspect the local Fins eat elsewhere, though. Definitely seems to cater to tourists.

During our stay in Helsinki we tried several different restaurants and Savotta was one of the best. Not only the food and service were excellent, but the whole atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice and authentic, looking like a genuine Finnish country farm.
