Description: The story of Kolme Kruunua ('three crowns') began in 1952, when restaurateur Irja Örn (1910-1992) together with her husband decided to renovate their café and bar Liisan Baari and turn it into a restaurant. Many still feel that the restaurant serves the very best meatballs, "Pyttipannu" ('hash') and fried Baltic herrings in the city. The well-preserved interior of Kolme Kruunua was designed by artist Emil Ruokolainen (1895-1968), who was a renowned decorative painter in his time. His artwork can be found, for instance, in several Finnish schools and churches. In the restaurant, his craftsmanship can especially be seen in the beautifully polished mirror hanging on the back wall. The glass paintings decorating the windows of Kolme Kruunua were designed and painted by artist Fritz Hilbert (1898-1981), who later became the artistic director of the S. Wuorio decorative painting company. Kolme Kruunua is one of the few restaurants in Helsinki where the demographic of the customers ranges from twentysomethings to over 80-year-olds. Some of the elder customers who remember their fathers spending time at the restaurant, now, in their twilight years, enjoy the atmosphere of the place themselves. In mid-1990s, the old wine bar was replaced with a bar counter, but otherwise the original interior with its wood paneling, old lamps, glass paintings and glass decorations has been preserved. A great place to be and to eat. The waiters are always helpful and friendly, they accept special wishes without any objection and they serve the food for four persons at the same time without any delay. That alone doesn't make the restaurant so outstanding. The big difference between this and others in Helsinki is that it is a truly historically designed restaurant without a hint of arrogance, the dishes are big enough even for hungry guests without being disgustingly too much, the variety of food reaches from classic meals (Wiener Schnitzel) over delicious steaks to very special Finnish dishes. We loved it there, we went there several times with different and demanding in terms of food friends and none of us was ever disappointed. Always a good place to eat and far away from pricey or too expensive for the delivered food!

This nice restaurant isn't far from the Senate Square (not even a 10min walk) but it's a bit more hidden than other restaurants so probably not so crowded with tourists. You have around 6 traditional Finnish dishes to choose from, besides quite a few others in the menu. The portions are big, you won't leave hungry!
We had the salmon soup, the meatballs and the schnitzel and really can't complain about the food, it tasted pretty good. The service was also nice even though we happened to be there on the day of the Ice Hockey World Championship (Finland was playing) so even the waiters were quite distracted looking at the tv but the service wasn't worse because of that and they were quite nice. Also, prices aren't that expensive for Helsinki if you go for the Finnish dishes.
All in all, a good experience and wouldn't mind going back.

We wanted a Finnish restaurant and most diners were indeed Finns. We were served by Petra who looked after us excellently throughout including discussing wine options to accompany the reindeer tenderloin. We would fully agree with others' comments on the tenderness and quality of the meat. It was a lively "pub atmosphere" which we thoroughly enjoyed on a Friday night.

This restaurant might not appeal at first sight because the decoration its not that stylish, but you feel good as soon as the service starts! We had as main dish the reindeer tenderloin steak with vegetables and I just can say: it was a dream! The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was casual and relaxed. The portions were big but nevertheless beautifully served. The prices were also just right!

We asked for a Finnish restaurant, and was recommended by the hotel. The reindeer tenderloin was a bit pricey, but amazing.
