Absolutely delicious! The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely and very authentic with a cool Finnish twist. You would want to reserve a table as the restaurant is really small.

I had tempura, a dish that's very easy to mes up, and it was absolutely perfect. I can't wait to go back.

The food is good japanese - perhaps basic - food. Sushi is not in the main role and the menu is rather long. I have visited some other Japanese restaurants in Helsinki , but they try to be more like "fine dining". Nothing wrong with that , but Kabuki is more relaxed and you can see that it is not new... The first owner was an ice hockey enthusiast (from Japan) and that explains the strange decorative stuff and gear with hockey photos.
Nothing to complain about the service or anything - and we even got a small table and good service when we just walked in without a reservation. Food was simple and simply good!
I do not want to see any finnish celebrities - but have heard that sometimes that happens in Kabuki. Especially some NHL players visit Kabuki regularly when they come home to Helsinki - and some film industry people. Then it is perhaps best to come some other day... Usually reservations are needed - and the what kind of table suits your legs/knees...

Kabuki is the undisputed best Japanese restaurant in Helsinki. It is not just a sushi bar, but a full and diverse Japanese kitchen. I usually go with a group, and we share various dishes such as kaiseki-style vegetables, tempura, sushi and sashimi, rice and noodles. Recently I went with an Indian friend and asked for only vegetarian dishes. They brought a really nice selection. Of course we also had miso soup and sake. You have to be careful in Finland because they often heat the sake, which kills the subtle flavor of a good brew. Kabuki serves Hakutsuru which is a quality sake and should never be warmed. The atmosphere of Kabuki, and the wide choice of dishes, makes you feel like you are in an izakaya in Japan. Reservations are always needed.

Kabuki may be a bit more pricey than other japanese restaurants, but you'll notice the difference in food & atmosphere! Make a reservation for a dinner and if you're lucky you might sit next to some finnish celebrity!
