“Kind of perfect low-fi discovery that leads you to the description: 'A Little Gem'”

I got lucky because someone cancelled. But I only realised just HOW lucky I was on arrival - Kuurna's a tiny restaurant with only a handful of tables (7 or 8), but the atmosphere, decor and food make it something very special. It's a straightforward set-up: €36 for 3 courses / €31 for 2. Some specials are written in the board and a few of them carry a small premium. I had steak tartare to start. Yum. Yum. Yum. Then fish of the day, which was tasty. Had a parfait to finish, which was good-to-v. good. Great if you're on your own and equally good for a romantic meal, I reckon. Service friendly and some mad chalk scribblings in the bathroom, which are worth a look. Wine served by the glass from an array of open bottles displayed (I like that) and tap water as standard. Highly recommended and if you're reading this review and wondering, STOP, pick up the phone and make a booking. I will iron my own legs if you don't like it...

“a little gem twinkling in downtown Helsinki”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2012

finally made it to this place after hearing some good things from friends, and read invariably good reviews. definitely worth a visit with friends or for a low key romantic dinner. the low ceilings are vaulted, the street outside cobbled and a stones throw from the harbour and Russian orthodox cathedral. on a crisp cold January evening it was very photogenic. service was decent, and two of the set 3 course menu courses were very good (only the dessert was rather ordinary). started with fried chicken hearts on braised red cabbage, a dish I'd never eaten before. it was tasty and substantial. while chicken hearts taste quite like...chicken, their texture and the way they were friend made them a little but special. paired this with a delicious glass of Austrian white (one of the by the glass choices for the evening). following that the main of fried pike perch was delicious. my plate was shiningly clean once I'd finished, accompanied by my new best friend the Austrian white. delicious. overall ambience was good - gentle buzz of conversation, chef working away in the small kitchen. overall a lovely way to spend a few hours of an evening in midweek. expect to pay about €60 per person for 3 courses and a few glasses of wine. Not cheap but decent value for Helsinki.

“A tiny little gem in Helsinki”

Went there the next day after they opened. Have been there many times since. My wife loves it, even if they sometimes make you sit on a wooden wine case. Or maybe that is why she likes it?

“Always very good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2012

Don't expect a fancy place but trust that the food has been made from excellent raw material of the season and with great respect for the ingrediences. Me and hubby have dined many times at Kuurna and have never ever been disappointed. Dishes that don't sound that fabulous have proven to be real gems. Their peppersteak is one of the best I have ever eaten thanks to its crispy surface. The place is tiny and there are as many tables and chairs as theoretically possible. The menu is limited to a few dishes. So do not expect a luxurious restaurant experience but go there to eat delicious food with someone who thinks alike. Make a table reservation, either for 6 pm or 8 pm and be prepared to be out by 8 if you go there at 6.
