“Best deal in town!”
Reviewed January 3, 2011

Incredible boutique hotel located steps to the ferries, churches and downtown Helsinki. A former prison transformed into an ultra comfortable hotel, one can only imagine what's happened within the walls! The rooms have it all, thick stone walls make the rooms very quiet, heated floors in the bathroom, flat screen TV... The breakfast buffet is second to none and the breakfast staff, especially Khovis, are terrific! Made to order omlettes, bacon, ham, eggs any way you like, salmon, herring, fruits, espresso.... Stay at this hotel, you will love it!

Our stay at Hotel Katajanokka was brief, but memorable. We booked this mostly because we knew that it's decent and also that one of us hadn't been there before. It was months between the booking and the stay so I had kind of forgot that this place used to be a prison, so it came as a nice surpise. Not often you choose to take the stairs everytime in and out of the top floor room, but in this hotel it added value. Hotel has been perfectly rebuilt with lots of comfy new and historic old.

We stayed only for one night, and we're also so tired that choosed to eat at the hotel restaurant (bit pricey, but good food - the salmiac-olives were bit too over the top, though worth the try). Hotel is located bit off the city centre, but with good connections.

Room was nice and clean with good sleeping quality. Bathroom was also very practical. Have to mention the milk-glass as a shower wall - you could see through into the shower from the bed. Not bad if on romantic getaway.

There was also a small parking lot for guest, operated by other company than the hotel and it couldn't be booked beforehand which was negative. €16 for a day was typical for Helsinki.

Had a really nice stay at this hotel. It was very clean and comfortable and staff were very helpful. Helsinki is a lovely city and the hotel is ideally located for getting into the centre. Walking took about 15 minutes and the tram was even quicker! Would definitely reccommend the hotel!

We stayed in this hotel in December 2010, and it looked wonderful with the snow! This hotel used to be a prison and although they completely updated the interior, the exterior looks still very much like a prison with the beautiful red brick walls. The staff was nice and helpful and the room looked good. It was cozy and clean and the bathroom was equipped with a great rain shower. The breakfast was one of the best we’ve had in Finland, with a choice of bread, cereal and porridge and cheeses, meats, salmon and vegetables. Also, hot eggs and bacon. The hotel is conveniently located in an quiet area of Helsinki, the tram 4 takes you to the Alexanterinkatu in 3 minutes and the tram stop is right in front of the hotel. We would definitely stay here again!

It was the uniqueness of this hotel as well as a good rate that prompted us to choose this hotel, and we have no regrets. Well, the hubby had some misgivings given the original use of the building (among others, political prisoners were incarcerated here).

That aside, we were pleased with the excellent and chatty front-desk service (they even came up with a phone charger to lend us), interesting landings and hallways, and atmospheric restaurant (also very professional service at dinner and high quality food). Loved the uniforms!

The room was decent if unimaginative: regular rooms have no views - a rather strange concession to its former prison manifestation considering everything else was modern.

There is free use of a computer and Internet next to the reception, which was nice - in-room Internet use is chargeable.

The hotel's location was extremely convenient, walking distance to the marketplace/waterfront and with the tram stopping right at the gate.

A memorable stay in all.

If you don't mind a quick walk to town this is probably the best place to stay in Helsinki... huge and excellent breakfast spread will save you money on the extremely expensive food in finland. Maybe one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept on. Rooms are small but nice and well laid-out. extremely thick walls mean no sound gets through. Great shower. Right off the tram 4 or 4t, but it's only five minutes walk to the city center and museums. Very close to scenic uspenski cathedral. book in advance for great deals. ideal for couples. may be a little cramped for traveling friends or families. mostly excellent service, some staff have typical finnish "iciness". we called them the wardens. no troubles though, just less friendly than some westerners may expect. however highly recommended overall. beyond the novelty this was a simply a great place to stay.

The location of the hotel is just superb. The surroundings were more small town rather than capital city. Just outside the gate was the No. 4 tram which took you to the center. It also went all the way to the Kammpi bus station which made our excursion to Porvoo very convenient.

The room we got was on the ground floor in the new extension wing. It was more spacious than we imagined and the nice sized window overlooked the front garden/enterance. Very quiet - contrary to some reviews we had read. The room was well equipped and included tea-coffee facilities. The bathroom had one of these huge shower heads which was great. Lots of storage space and lighting. The room was very well decorated and was kept exceptionally clean.

The breakfast was sumptuous with hot stuff made to order! First for us! It would have been better if the expresso machine was fully working so that we could get a hot cappuchino. We had one dinner in the restaurant: lamb shank and savoy cabbage. Both excellent. Kudos to the chef. The one bloke in the restaurant was a bit cranky initially : telling us to hold our horses when we asked to be seated, banging the menus and the cups but he turned friendly after we had placed our orders!

The front office staff can be a bit less dour but they were very helpful in guiding us as well as helping us with the airport transfer.

The lack of free wi-fi in the rooms was the main negative. Made it difficult to use the Iphone. The hotel provided free cables for the free high speed connection in the room. But if you didn't have a computer, just a smart phone it would have been of no use.

Weather permitting it would be worth taking a walk around the hotel area. Very close there is a seaside walking track where you can also sit on a bench and meditate while inhaling the fresh Baltic air!

The hotel is a 5 minute walk to the Viking Terminal and to the Upenski cathedral. It is a 7-10minute walk to the open market area and 15 minute walk to Senate square. Very, very convenient. There is also a very well stocked supermarket that's open till 10pm weekdays a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Very convenient for budget travellers.
