“Most confortable prison ever!”
Reviewed May 4, 2010

This is a great hotel, a little bit out of the city centre but in a pleasant 5-10 minutes walk to it, located in a quiet and elegant neighbourhood in an island east of Helsinki.
As you could imagine, its main attractive is that the building was, until the 90s, Helsinki prison, and it really looks like it from outside and the interior corridors. Appart from that, it is a comfortable place to stay, with cozy and modern rooms that have all the ammenities, including a big flat screen-TV, a mini bar, nice firm beds and a complete en-suite bathroom (even for the basic ones).
Our room was close to the main entrance, on the first floor, but it was still quiet and silent. It had a big window facing the rear garden, that was completely covered by the snow at that time.
Breakfast was included in our rate, and was served in the former prison canteen, located in the -1 floor, with vaulted ceilings and great atmosphere. Food was abundant and of good quality.
Helsinki was part of an extraordinary trip through some Northern Europe countries, and I would recommend for all people to visit it during the winter, when all the city is covered by the snow and the sea is completely frozen (we were walking on it!).

The conversion of this hotel from a prison to a hotel is fantastic. The rooms are beautiful and very well appointed. The staff were helpful.
The breakfast was lovely, plenty of variety and very fresh. The jailbird restaurant was very nice, seemed expensive but was the same as the rest of Helsinki.
The location was fantastic and the tram stopped just outside the hotel.

Very nice hotel in one of the most beautiful (residential) district of Helsinki. Modern and sylishly remodeled prison cells will be your hotel room.

You can't open the windows (as in most hotels in Finland) but they have perfect working A/C in all rooms.

Breakfast is excellent above average even served in the dark cellar restaurant.

I was a bit surprised that the Sauna (next to restaurant) opening hours were for women 16-16.45 and for men from 17-17:45. Business people usually might still be on the way back home from office or meeting.... ? First time ever I found such strange practises!

Parking is basically (still?) free of charge as long as you don't pay your ticket at a ticket vending machine (they didn't check but I came late and left early all 3 mornings)....

BTW: praktically not too many dining options around (Nepalese is very nice), Esplanadi is closest but most expensive place in HKI (a 0,25l glass of wine for 20 EUR!!!!)

Recommend if you get a good rate (I paid 55 EUR single with BF at ebookers only because I stayed 3 nights)

We traveled through the Baltic States and ended with a 3 night stay in Helsinki. This was by far our very favorite hotel of the entire trip. The remodeled prison was so well done. Each room consists of 3 former cells and was quite roomy. Lots of natural light. Our room had 3 windows and another window in the bathroom. There are stories of ghosts and one night about 2 in the morning the shower came on by itself, hmmmmm. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Wouldn't stay anywhere else on my next trip! We really liked the Jailbird Restaurant too and the best breakfast buffet!

Slightly away from the centre but it's only a 10 minute walk, or the number 4 tram stops right outside.

Despite it's origins as a jail, the hotel is very comfortable, pleasant and has the feel of a top end hotel. Food in the restaurant is nice but a tad on the expensive side. Free WiFi is available but due to the thick walls doesn't make it into the rooms.
