Despite being renovated and converted to provide excellent accomodation, it hasnt changed the outward appearance which makes this hotel quite unique. The huge prison wall still surrounds the hotel and the garden hasnt been "prettified" just kept as lawn. Internally the cells and stairways and corridors remain the same - just smarter - guess the prisoners never had fancy carpeting in their time. Our room, although small, was very well laid out, tastefully decorated, huge bed, flat screen tv, safe, mini bar and adequate storage space and very clean and very quiet. the view was not good, just to a wall - but what do you expect! Bathroom was fab - very modern and clean and large. 2 showers - overhead and power - and the best bath ever - perfect size and design for reading in the bath! It was very high to get into though so take care. Buffet breakfast included, as much as you wanted, and good choice - meats, cheese, salad!!, omelette, meat balls, frankfurters, porridge, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yoghourt and lots of different breads, fruit juices and choice of hot drinks. Position was great; set in a residential semi-island, amongst beautiful art nouveau buildings about 10 minutes walk from main helsinki square whre all the boats and ships arrive but a tram stops right outside the entrance and available about every 10 minutes (tip: you can purchase a 3 day ticket for 13.60 euros which enables you to use all the trams, buses and some of the ferries, including the one to Suonemlina island, which is really recommended as a day trip). Helsinki was beautiful and this hotel ideal. Also, Finland is very expensive and this hotel represented very good value for money - we had 3 nights for the price of 2 - although if you drive (we didnt) parking is extra and was expensive. There is a sauna, which we didnt use, and an outdoor terrace bar/cafe, again which we didnt use.

The Best Western Katajanokka is a real find. As other reviewers have said, the property - once a prison - has character and takes a little getting used to, but offers spotlessly clean rooms, comfortable beds, and great bathrooms. The free internet connection is very good, and there's a gym and sauna in the basement (both of which, sadly, appear to get little use). The self-serve breakfast offered in the mornings is very generous. All in all, excellent value for money, especially in pricey Helsinki.

History buffs may be interested to note that the hotel is also a historic site. On the second floor there's a small bust of Finland's former President, Risto Ryti, who was tried in 1946 on trumped up charges of war crimes at the behest of Stalin and subsequently served part of his sentence in what is now Room 401.

Really enjoyed staying in this converted prison, which didn't feel at all institutional. This was our second trip to Helsinki and I was suprised to find a hotel on Katajanokka, a very pleasant, largely residential island, close to the harbour and Esplanade. Our room was wonderfully quiet with a view over the garden (formerly exercise area!) and very comfy beds. Although the windows didn't open, it seemed to remain a perfect ambient temperature without any heating or air con which made an agreeable change. We didn't eat in the Restaurant during our stay, but did use the outside terrace bar several times and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. An excellent choice.

A few things that might be worth noting. Firstly the breakfast, though fine wasn't as varied as some Scandinavian buffet breakfasts so I wouldn't pay extra for this. Secondly, there was no chest of drawers in the room which could be annoying if you're staying for more than a couple of nights and have lots of clothes. Third, and most important, the bath/shower was very high and both I and my husband found it quite difficult to get in and out of. We are both on the short side but young and fairly agile, so this could present difficulties if you have any kind of mobility problems. I would suggest asking whether they have any alternatives or could provide a step (like the ones children use for cleaning their teeth at full-sized basins) that would make things easier before you book.

This hotel is in an ideal location for the Vikingline ferry. (This is the slow ferry to a.o. Tallinn.)

Pro's: breakfast, rooms, free internet at reception (with printer)

Con's:
* Sauna is open for just one (1) hour a day!
* The bar is a bit boring, but a good place for a peaceful moment.
* Not really downtown.

A good restaurant concerning food (not the service) is Demo.
