Very interesting place to stay. The accomodations are confortable, large room, the reception is excellent, good breakfast, quiet neighborhood, short distance to downtown and there is abundance of public transportation. I strongly recomend this hotel.

The hotel is charming and just a 5 minute tram ride from the city centre. The staff were helpful but couldn't recommend a nearby restaurant. The hotel restaurant was ok but a bit over the top when you're eating by yourself.

Katajanokka is a hotel built from historic prison in the center of Helsinki. 10 minutes walk from the famous Esplanada, that is as wide as a river but still You understand that somehow it is a boulevard... The hotel boasts its history and has souveniers covering prison times - even striped T-shirts. Inside You feel strange assurance and strong sense of safety. All rooms are well furnished and have all neccessary modern equipment. The restaurant downsairs, practically in the cellar, has stylish and tasty dishes for You - well done and served.

This was a great place to stay......worried that we were in for a rather "altenative" holiday (Lonely Planet goes on about buying handcuffs at reception!) but it was a really amazing place. Lovely comfortable rooms, great friendly helpful staff and fascinating history and architecture. Good value too and very close in to the centre and right by a tram stop. Loved it!

Room Tip: Rooms seemed very quiet....very thick walls....we had 2 stays there and 2 different rooms both of wh...

Chose Hotel Katajanokka from all the positive reviews on TT. We were given Room 424 on the top floor, it was at the end of the row of rooms which meant no passing traffic! The room was well double glazed and we could only hear a very faint rumble of the passing trams. We are a very comfortable bed, good quality bedlinen with duvets, a good size bathroom with walk in shower/wetroom with rainforest shower head. Toiletries were provided as was an ironing board & iron - something many hotel's don't provide.
A kettle with tea/coffee & hot chocolate was included in the room facilities as was a mini bar but as the contents were expensive to us we did not partake. A large bottle of JP Chenet Cabinet Sauvignon was on the desk with a price tag of 38 euros - this would cost only a quarter of the price in the UK!
We ate in the Jailbird restaurant on our first evening. This was not cheap - a burger & chips is 19.90 euros and a glass of wine nearly 10 euros!
Breakfast also served in the Jailbird restaurant is a good selection of juices, cold meats, fish, salad stuff, cereals, jams, breads, hot foods including eggs cooked to order etc.

A good location although out of city centre, the no 4 tram runs past outside. For 8 euros a 24 hour day ticket gets you round the city on public transport - we used the trams several times a day during the 3 days we were there.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay at the hotel a;though there were 3 minor quibbles - which I did include on the hotel feedback form:
a) Given all the thought that has gone into the room, good quality linen, luxury style bathrooms etc - why skimp on the pillows which contained foam chips! Please change these for feather or at least non-allergenic pillows.
b) The chairs in the restaurant are very uncomfortable - the bar across the front of the seat digs into the underneath of your legs!!
c) Slow wifi - which has been mentioned several times by reviewers - please do something about this maybe a booster - even the pc in the lounge was slow!

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor - quiet and corridor is lit forom large windows above. Room 424 is nice.

This unique hotel combines atmosphere, comfort and good service for the same price. The hotel, which used as a prison in the past, situated number of tram stops from the center of Helsinki (on a clear day can be done either on foot, as long as you don't carry your luggage) in a quite dead end zone. There is a tram stop right outside the hotel (tram number 4).

The staff, wearing stripe tee-shirts, was extremely professional and very courteous. The breakfast, with the polish gray dishes alike in prison (as seen in the movies), was rich and excellent, as it should be in a first class hotel, and the well equipped room (even an iron and an iron board were in it), located on the first floor, was very modern, comfortable and spacious with luxurious large shower room, high ceilings, a small low window, as well as high windows, so that you could not escape...(but don't worry: the bars were removed...).

The internet in the hotel is free, but I didn't succeed using it inside the room (the thick walls maybe...).

I really enjoyed the stay in this unusual hotel.

My wife and I stayed in Hotel Katajanokka from September 12-16 and found it generally very good.

Others have pointed out the fact of this hotel being a converted prison. Apart from the striped shirts on some of the staff, the prison architecture makes it wonderfully quiet; the walls are three feet thick. Those walls also make wifi in the rooms problematic, but access is good in the basement restaurant and in the guest lounge just off the front desk.

Arriving late after a long trip from Vancouver, we got a cordial welcome. We found the staff cheerful, friendly and professional, with fluent English (like Stockholm, Helsinki seems full of English speakers).

A rather narrow basement holds the breakfast room, which turns into a restaurant in the evening. The breakfast buffet was good, though a bit limited compared with others we've seen, with the Nordic emphasis on cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables as well as fruit, cereal, bacon and sausages. You could ask the cook for eggs prepared as you wished. We had dinner in the Jailhouse restaurant only once--a very good chicken Caesar salad.

The real strength of this hotel is its location in the Katajanokka neighbourhood, a peninsula divided the north and south harbours. It's a beautiful area of quiet streets and impressive apartment buildings designed in the Jugendstil style, and a pleasure to walk around in. The view over the north harbour is especially fine; the south harbour is dominated by the giant ferries to Stockholm and Tallinn.

You can also walk easily into downtown Helsinki and Market Square and Senate Square, though the #4 tram right outside the hotel entrance will get you there faster. In good weather, which we had, Esplanadi Park is a great place to hang out or enjoy lunch. (If lunch is too liquid, the WCs in the basement of City Hall, nearby, are reputedly the best in the neighbourhood.)

If you've come back from a long day of sightseeing and shopping, and don't feel like dinner in the Jailhouse or going back downtown, go out the side entrance of the hotel onto Vyökatu and walk north a couple of blocks, then turn left on Luotsikatu. Halfway down the block is the Mount Everest Nepali restaurant, where we twice enjoyed excellent dinners. (Again, staff speak English and the menus include English.)

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Katajanokka and if we ever return to Helsinki we'll book there again...and go for more walks in its wonderful neighbourhood.

Room Tip: On the top floor, the wide hallways are illuminated by skylights, making them very bright, airy, and...
