“Lovely hotel, and handy for centre”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

Fascinating & interesting layout - a former prison. Each room seems to comprise two cells joined together. The result is not large, but ample. Everywhere clean, and nicely painted. Staff very helpful and friendly. Very good breakfast variety. Nice free gym; sauna available for extra, but we didn't sample. Free wifi around; also free internet available on PC in the lounge.

Tram stop just outside hotel, leads to city centre in a few minutes. After arrival, we usually walked into the centre - about 20 minutes.

We ate out during the evenings, so didn't sample dinner in the hotel, but cooked breakfast lovely.

Ferry nearby to special island, semolina (not spelt like this though).

Best Western Premier Hotel Katajanokka is a pleasant hotel located in a very nice quiet neighborhood near the centre. The tram stops in front of the hotel. The special feature of the hotel is that it is a converted prison. The renovation is very well executed and, opposed to what you might think, the hotel is very comfortable and even cozy. Highly recommended.

The hotel staff is dressed in pseudo prison clothes. We thought this was not a funny joke but it is not really bothersome.

We had a nice, quiet and spacious business plus room with bathtub.

Nice and quiet neighborhood.

The breakfast was good and varied a bit every morning which was nice.

We will definitely book this hotel again.

The hotel building has previously been a jailhouse and it shows in decoration nicely. Big and clean rooms. Wireless wifi-connection worked only in the lobby because of thick walls. We were upgraded from standard room to superior. We enjoyed!

We were in this hotel for three nights and it was a lovely place to stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, always ready to research markets and restaurants we were interested in, printing off route maps etc. Our room was lovely and clean and spacious. The room it self was lovely, the shower amazing, the bed very comfortable and the complimentary teas went down a warm treat following a day of cold sightseeing.
Breakfast was not the most amazing or appetising, but there was definitely enough variety to meet the dietary requirements of all. I would definitely recommend booking breakfast at the hotel as many restaurants were closed during our stay and the only other options were cafes, which only really did dessert.

The hotel is really close to the market square, senate square and Uspenskin cathedral. We walked from the main train station to our hotel on arrival which took around 20 minutes with luggage and many stops to read the map. However, tram number 4 and 4T stop right outside the hotel, they are fairly frequent and take you into the city centre in under 5 minutes. I would recommend buying a day/2 day travelcard as opposed to the Helsinki card as we found this was better value for money.

Overall, a fantastic comfortable stay. Me and my partner would highly recommend this hotel to everyone and would love to go again.

Kitos to all the staff.

This hotel is really unusual. Although it's renovated, the hall and the restaurant are kept in the prison style. The room was very good, we liked the bathroom. The location is not too far from the center. All in all that was an interesting experience :) The hotel staff showed us 2 rooms which they didn't renovate on purpose, that looked scary...

Stayed here in Feb, for 3 nights, and 3 comfortable nights they were! The converted jail concept gave our stay a little extra something! Our room didn't actually feel like a jail cell, everything was done up so nicely.
Rooms are a good size, bed was a bit too hard for our liking (only negative), bathroom was big and clean, very modern.
The gym was also nice to have- though small it sufficed. We did not try the sauna- went somewhere else for it, but be aware it is only available for ladies from 8.30- 9.30 am and for males 9.30- 10.30 am.
The breakfast spread was good, though selection of bread and cheese not as big as some other hotels. Loved the little pastry things that come with the egg (Finnish food).
The staff were friendly too, and the whole place was lovely,

Only negatives:
- Location: not in the centre of the city. The tram does stop right outside and comes quite often, depending on the day and time of day. The walk to the city takes about 20 minutes. Not the best in winter.
- There were used glasses in our room when we arrived (real dirty ones)- a bit of a contrast to everything else about the place which is top notch.
